I was playing tonight, and around 2:00 a.m. pacific time, some French people got on the server and made a mess of things.
The two French kids were shouting back and forth non-stop, first shouting obsenities in French (not a problem for those who don't speak French but for me...) and after I asked them to keep quiet, they started yelling obsenities in English, singing, etc. and they would not shut up. I tried suggesting to the rest of the players that they utilize the Kick Vote option, but, only a few voted. It was a shame. On top of that, some other guy was trying to make us all hear his home stereo through the voice chat...argh!

So, I was thinking-seems like most of the admins are off by midnight and for us night owls, the server sometimes gets populated by n00bs who have no respect for the rules of the server (whether camping deemers, suicide nuking, using foul language, "talking smack" etc.)

I know we can't monitor the server 24-7, but, just wondering how we can deal with stuff like this. I hope it doesn't become more of a problem, but, when more people find out what a wonderful server&mod this it, they'll want to play. Some of them will become great members of the community and others will just try to make life hell for us...

With this I totally agree. I usually always play in the early morning or late night. And Have this problem fairly often. ( I work evening shifts so the only time I play during the day is my days off)

I tend to be warning people about something every game. And for those of you that know me I usually Only talk once or twice a whole game sometimes less. Yet on occasion I am vebally warning people on and on.

However I know that the admins have there own timetables with school or work and if someone is very agrevating I just innitiate a kick vote against them. And if there isnt enough people do do a vote, I just play on and turn off my volume for awhile.

Ane Shrike the best way is to let an admin know. Take down their names and the admins can check the logs and ban them at a later date.

The admins are very good about checking logs

But ya I know what you two mean, I tend to play at the sametimes... I see you guys telling people to stop camping the nukes, etc. you two have probably heard me doing the same.

A late night admin or two would be nice but that's up to druid and shan. I can certainly understand if they are careful about adding more, in general the server is VERY well protected, more so then any other I can think of honestly.

I agree with with you Shrike. I was thinking that the admins could give a select few players that are playing at those times of the night some privelages. Like the ability to kick a player, or temperarily ban someone until the big kahunas can review the situation. Give some select night owls (that everybody can trust!) a little bit of authority.

If that were to be done I know I can trust people like Mystic, Cha-Chi, Chyster, DaRedeye, and JamesIX. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

If the admins were to do this, we could all vote on who we trust the most on a list that the admins come up with (I think you know what I mean, well I hope).

the main reason i play this server almost exclusivly is due to the healthy friendly atmosphere created by the absense of profanity and cheap tactics. big thx to dru and shan for this choice! it really bugs me when some 13 yr old who just learned a new swear word comes on and ruins it for everyone, so plz, keep up the good work

On our server we had a problem similar, because you can't "monitor" voice chat with logs. We got lucky in the end, we had a regular girl in Austrialia that had donated an always followed rules, so with her time-zone, she's able to admin most of the times the rest of us would never be on.

The only way to really do something is by finding an admin in another time zone that's offset by a bunch of hours. We couldn't think of any other way to police the voice chat. We uphold the same atmosphere as this server, makes playing a lot better.

Anyone is welcome to email us at the admin address with reports of rule-breaking. Of course, the chat logs are also monitored, so if you think you'll forget to email, type something about it in the chat logs (e.g. "hey admin, BobNoName was swearing on the voice chat").

Glad to see the interest in this topic.
I recognize some of my fellow night owls-Tarl, Jagged, macadamia. I agree with mac about Mystic, Cha-Chi, Chyster, DaRedeye, and JamesIX-all stand up players. Perhaps sub-admin priviledges could work.

I will definitely let the admins know with an email/pm as to who the perpetrators were (took time to write down their names)

Another idea-is it possible to make the opening message persist a longer (when you first get into the game, there's the server name, code of conduct, etc.) and would that help remind people about the rules?

I certainly understand your frustration. In the year and a half or so that this server has been going, we have constantly struggled with how to get people to be respectful on the server. We have tried a great number of things, and thus far this way seems to be the best for all concerned (both those who choose to follow the rules, and those who don't).

The server agreement cannot be closed for 30 seconds when someone initially signs into the server. A summary of the rules is also included in the message of the day. I am of the opinion that if someone does not bother to read the MOTD or the agreement in that 30 seconds before they click "agree," they will not bother to read it in any amount of time.

Also, based on the content of the "unban me" emails that I receive, I think that even most of the people that break the rules read them, and just choose not to follow them.

I do have a plan to put together with another server admin (bushbomb) to create a distributeable admin framework. He already has most of the commands written.

It's just a matter of "Mow the lawn" or write the code

At such a time that we set it up, it's likely that we'll distribute more commands to more people.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

Really do have to say... still the server with the fewest problems I've ever had... Yall do a bang-up job administrating

Even with the few kiddies that can't follow the rules, still very few problems, and they're dealt with quickly (unlike most other servers where they're not dealt with at all0.
