Hello, I'm a relative newcomer to the server and would like to ask for feedback on an issue that has been bothering me.

Generally when I play, I do my best to keep out of other people's way and let them fight their own battles, especially those with lower levels than I (58 ) as I don't want to steal kills from them. This results in me walking right past people fighting groups of monsters, and recently I've wondered: do people take this the wrong way and think I'm some kind of jerk for leaving them hanging? Or is this sort of behavior expected (though it doesn't seem very common)? On a broader note, how do I tell when someone wants to be left alone and when someone wants help?

Thank you for your time.

Obviously everyone has their own playing style, and a lot of it depends on what type of class they are using at the time.

Adren junkies and weap masters tend to be loners (because they can). Medics want to heal, so they naturally want to be around others. Engineers could go either way, but mostly I see them stick together at a base and help each other.

I have a couple rules of thumb that I go by in regards to knowing if someone wants/needs help.

1. I tend to help low levels that are surrounded by mobs or having trouble with a nasty monster whether I think they want help or not. Most times they need it, not to mention it's good for high level players to keep low levels alive. Monsters' levels adjust to whatever living players' levels are, so as a high level, I'd rather not have monsters at my level (at least without a piercing weapon).

2. The particular wave I'm on will determine how much help I give. In later, tougher waves, I kill anything I see regardless of whether someone is already fighting it. There's no time for mulling things over. Kill or be killed.

Some of it depends on if I personally know the player and how they like to play. It also depends on what class they are and if I think they can hold their own. Heck, I even know of one player (won't say who...old timers know) who will actually ask other players not to heal him or give shield boost, etc.

We've had the whole "kill steal" debate here many times. The general consensus is that there is no such thing. The nature of invasion matches is that you kill anything that moves. Personally I don't have the awareness skill. Don't want it, don't need it. I don't target monsters by how much health they have. They all gotta die.

Just go with your gut. If someone looks like they need help, they probably do. The worst that happens if you help them is that they may live to ask you not to help next time.

just gotta disagree with 1 point electrician made. some medics are battle-medics, meaning they dont care to heal as much as use their med abilities to make them tougher. as a medic, I go both ways, depends on how I am feeling and the server composition. all in all, if the wave is at a slow point or a low wave so not alot is happening, I will bypass a player-monster duel and let that player have it. if there is a 1v2 or even 1v3 player-monster fight, I let the player have them. but if there is more... holy crap help him (or her) out. if its a busy wave or its getting rough (10 and above) forget what I said and kill whatever is there. but of course if its down to the stragglers who havent decided to die yet, let that player have them... there will be more in a little bit

Fallen if you have such a problem with people making your base stronger then don't build one.

Locrian I have seen you on and as Electrician and Trooper have both stated it all depends on the person playing. It also depends on the class being played and by whom! there are some that go out of their way to heal and to do TEAM play which is how the server is supposed to be geared towards if you read the forums you'll see this as Szlat tries to balance out the classes. Now I have a player of each type of class and I will lvl 1 up and switch sometimes I'll go extra time on 1, now my general class char is the lowest and I have bought the medic skills to keep myself alive as a low lvl player, BUT I also go out of my way to heal others with my medic skills and to give shields with the engineer skills. now I get xp form shields but not with medic which its setup that way and at 1st it bothered some of us but we understand why after discussing it with Szlat. The main thing is that I heal everyone as a TEAM player, As Elect said if the low lvls die off the critters become real dam hard to kill! Instead of 3 or 4 shots with a flak it now becomes 20 or 30 plus! depending on the lvl of the player.
Most ppl will say thanks for the help at some time or ask if you need anything they happen to have such as adren weapons or artifacts it all depends on who is playing and not. most of the old timers will offer up good weapons to everyone and if a Am is on will make it or try to make a good weapon to pass out. on that note PLEASE DO NOT TOSS OLD WEAPONS AWAY NEAR THE PERSON HANDING OUT THE GOOD WEAPON!!!!! there is a very strong chance that they will accidentally pick it up and it now becomes every other weapon they can toss as a good weapon or less often depending on the number of weapons they pick up of the same type.

Now I have probably gone WAY overboard on this but it's just me try'n to be helpful

I may be getting old and falling apart but I can sure can raise Hell and have fun doing it!

might I suggest some time away ?
completely off topic

Electrician put it best
players who want to be loners will leave an area if they are getting too much "help"
otherwise teamwork wins matches ,everyone gets more points/xp and it's more fun

Many good points so far. In general most players do not mind help killing as long as you play courteous and are team oriented. Players always enjoy shields and health topped off. Engineers enjoy people boosting their link gun and turrets. Alert players if you see a broken trans laying around especially in a “safe” area. Please DO NOT shoot redeemers from inside the base this is one of the few ways to team kill on this server. Do not block turrets lanes of fire or plant your kill sentinels there, you can move, the turrets can not. If it is not your base, don’t destroy it or block up entire door ways. Pets do not kill much if the medic is hiding in a safe area, so get out and kill. If a monster has a shield and someone is distracting it, do both of you a favor and shoot it in the back. Most of all, if a player complains about you stealing their kill, then they should be playing more and complaining less.

Welcome to the server Locrian.

As others have said, the nature of Invasion makes it a team effort so there really isn't a problem with stealing kills. Depending on your level and play style, you may decide to take it easy the first few waves and let the lowbies rack up some points... or you may only have 10-20 minutes to play and want to maximize your time, so just go after it hard and fast. With me it is usually the latter due to time limitations.
