Greetings everyone,

Our colocation provider, XMission is closing down the part of the data center that DisastrousConsequences.com is currently hosted in, and we are being required to move the server to a newer and better portion of the facility.

The downside to this is that we must undergo an IP address change and an hour of downtime while we move the equipment.

We have put a temporary transition server in place and for about the next month if you connect to the old IP address you will be automatically connected to the new IP address.

If you are reading this message after 8/1/2010 and you have not already been connected to the new server, you may have to launch UT2004 and type: `open 166.70.164.178 and re-add it to your favorites.

We didn't want to do this either, but sadly, we've not much choice in the matter, and we'll be in better space with additional resources.

Thanks everyone,

TheDruidXpawX

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

Dru... are you doing anything to also avoid stale DNS caching so that folks can get at the forums and such with minimal interruptions? I know DNS caches and name based virtual hosts can be a real major PITA when it comes to DNS cache delays.

Good luck on the maintenance! I just went through some maintenance here to change my internal subnet allocation, and that is only half as bad as what you are dealing with (I can at least force the cache flushes).

This is probably overly technical, but I'm going to drop the DNS TTL to 60 seconds ahead of the change, so there should be no interruption of service.

If anyone has that issue, they can flush the DNS.

In case others don't know what is being mentioned here, ever website that is accessed or searched for gets resolved and stored into you DNS cache. This way it doesn't have to resolve it each time you try to access that site. If an instance such as this happens where a domain name changes IP addresses, you may be hitting a wall where it can't find the site anymore as it keeps trying to access it at the old IP. Flushing the DNS cache will remove all the resolved websites in the cache and will force it to resolve all new queries. The command for this is as follows:

and the command prompt or in the run field: IPCONFIG /flushdns
This is for the website only! this has nothing to do with the game itself. That list of favorite servers is stored within the game and not DNS. You have to reselect the server again as Dru mentioned.

Now, if a forwarder is put into place as discussed this shouldn't be an issue at that point, but I feel if the outage is going to be short, than a forwarder is not necessary. I think we will live 'till it's back up. Just give us a time frame to check back.

OR....Dru can change the TTL so it will expire so it will force a resolution on your part.... Probably a more simple solution...

Actually, depending on where the old cache is (e.g. is it on your ISP's name server), you could have just be hosed without steps like Dru is going to take. I don't think I would have done a 60 second TTL, but certainly would have dropped it to an hour about now (from my norm of 1 day).

Oh... and don't forget the Min TTL Dru. I remember when we forgot that at CompuServe, and it overrode our TTL heading into a similar change. Drove us nuts while all those cached copies expired. Thankfully, this problem does not cause an issue except for pretty much where the forums are concerned.
