I have long been a player of games like Risk, and computer games like it. For years, the folks running the PC, one of the obvious games was the Civilization series. But being a VMS, and later UN*X and open source type (hey, like maids, I don't do Windows...LOL), years ago, I was playing games like Empire and Xconq, and when the latter stopped being maintained, I found another game Freeciv. After several years of not playing it, I started playing it again a few weeks ago, and have noticed considerable development, including a version for Windows. But seeing a Windows port, it got me to wondering if anyone else was interested in games like this.
BTW... for more information about FreeCiv, the web site for it is at http://www.freeciv.org

I tried freeciv a while back. I just got Civ revolutions for my DS, and started looking into playing civ 4 again. I have been attempting to install it in linux with wine, but have yet to be successful (the game doesn't install in vista properly either.) Apparently the only version that does work is the pirated version.
Civ5 is in the works currently, and I hope for some linux support (at least work with wine)
I am almost certain that fireaxis will do their best to not support linux because they are afraid of piracy, and drm is seldom supported in linux.
I have been able to get Master of Orion2 to work in wine quite flawlessly (I can't get it to work in windows xp or vista.)
After playing moo2 for a while, I was determined to find a remake of it. There is freeorion, and openmoo2.
I don't think freeorion works on 64bit systems.
openmoo2 is using python with pygame. The game uses original game data files, the main thing that is needed is rules. Both are not playable at the moment. I think openmoo2 might get more momentum since the graphics are not the focus yet.

There is a web version of freeciv: http://freeciv.net. You can also play on a iphone too.
As for civ4: I got it to install with Wine (need version 1.0.42 to get it to install) but now I am getting some sort of error, but I can't get the message box to take focus to read it.

Alice and the Hatter: Quotes: Alice in Wonderland
Alice: What a funny watch! It tells the day of the month, and it doesn't tell what o'clock it is!
The Hatter: Why should it? Does your watch tell you what year it is?
Alice: Of course not, but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together.
The Hatter: …which is just the case with mine.

I got civ4 to work completely in wine now...it turned out that I needed to install all of the patches. I did have to reduce the graphic effects, because one effect (not sure which one it is yet) causes the game to crash when the computer tries to communicate with you...There are other graphical glitches, but nothing that interferes with the game play.
I just bought the complete edition DVD because it doesn't require the disk to play, but I haven't tried it out yet.
