I'm hoping someone may have a solution, but I just tested UT3 on my desktop and during the menu it freezes after about a minute. I updated the drivers from Nvidia and I think it made things worse, it froze immediately and my computer went into a loop of restarting until after 5 attempts. When it freezes, the screen has short lines running diagonally across the screen, actually both my monitors. I'm a little afraid to boot up the game again before I know what the issue is. My roomate has the exact same specs as I do and he's running fine with the new drivers so I'm lost. The only thing I noticed was that my CPU was running at 100 for awhile in UT's menu screen, but that's all I can think of. Anyone have some ideas?

Specs:
Nvidia 7800 GT
Pentium 4 3.2 ghz
2 gigs ram

Update: I tried getting into UT again and had the same problem. This time however my computer would not recover from its boot loop, I would get to the windows loading screen and it'd just restart. I left it off for an hour and it recovered after only one reboot. Because letting it sit helped, could it be an overheating issue? I bought a brand new cpu fan about 3 months ago which has worked great so I'm not sure about that possibility, but I figured the more information I can provide couldn't hurt.

Sounds like overheating to me. When was the last time you dusted out the inside of your computer?

My sons comp just did the same type of thing yesterday actually. Started beeping at him in warning, then shut down. (have it set in bios to warn at 85 c and shut down at 90 c, he never gets above 65 c). I ended up pulling the fan and heatsink, cleaning the thermal grease from both chip and block, blowing out the heat sink, pulling the cpu and blowing out the socket, then reinstalling all of it with fresh grease. Then , as a bonus I pulled all of his memory, swapped it around, and all of the cards, just in case of card creep.

get the nvidia beta driver ..169.12 or higher,
turn off the sound card and then try the game to see if thats related to the freezing..
<also the game isnt meant to be played at high settings unless you have top notch comp.. turn off all background progs..

if you have amd.duo core get the optimizer... thiers also a setting in internet options or something ..to give most of your memory to either running programs or background programs ..set it to running..
also pump a fan into your comp .see if it helps.. i havent froze .at all

nvidia 7300 le.
amd athalon 64x2..2.9 gz..
realtek high def audio.5.1
2 gig ram . 320gb hard drive
windows vista home premium.

I really appreciate the suggestions... I disabled my sound card and rebooted with the beta drivers installed. The game's settings are at Texture 2 and World 2 so I'm not demanding too much from my system. This time around it lasted all the way up until I tried loading a game then it did it's screen freeze. I tried adjusting the heat warning in my bios, however it became passworded from the last time I brought it into the shop... so that option is out for a bit and I don't really want to remove the battery to get rid of it hehe. Once it crashed again I left it off for two hours and it took 3 reboots to get going without the lines. Here are the pictures of the screen once it crashes.

I have a feeling I will be bringing it in to be fixed, I kind of believe this is just a continuation of the problems I was having a few months ago that I thought were fixed...

Did you get your video card when the 7800s first came out?

I loose signal to my monitor and the only thing in common between our systems is the 7800.

I don't believe so, I payed 300 for it, so I think it was a bit after it was released. I thought my last issue with my computer was the video card so I sent it back and I received a new one that seemed to fix the former issue. So this card is about 3 months old while my former one was a year old.

just to try, when it does freeze, then the reboot with lines, unplug your monitors from the card (or from the back of the monitor) then plug them back in, then turn it on. (I was having an issue with my vc with the lines everytime i started the comp, but if i unplugged and replugged it would be fine. [releasing some built up charge resident in the card? not really sure, got 2 new cards and it went away.]

Hey Pyramidion,

Sorry to hear about your issues. I have a completely different setup from you but have experienced a similar symptom from time to time so I thought it might be worth mentioning the following.

I have dual Radeon 1950 XTX cards in crossfire and when starting a game I'd occasionally get signal corruption on screen which looked very similar to your screenshots. It looked like a series of diagonal flickering lines stretching across the screen. Although it only occured when I launched a game, not on the desktop. I googled the problem and eventually found someone with the same problem and it boiled down to a faulty 'dongle' that connected the two cards, the simple fix was wiggling the cable which made the lines go away. Occasionally I'd have to re-boot to fix the issue.

If you check the cabling out this may be a part fix for you but I also think you may have a secondary problem with heat which you also need to address. No way should your CPU be running at 100c on just the UT3 menu, somethings definately not right there.

Good luck bud.

I was wondering, does the same error occur when you load other games? And if not what sort of temp is the CPU running at when playing those games?

Also does Windows Event Viewer give you any details of system/application crashes?

You could also try running 3D Mark or some other stress-testing software to see if you can replicate the error.

You may of already tried system restore, if not is it worth a go?

Is it worth trying a complete clean install of your drivers and the game? It may be that you still have traces of the previous driver version that are conflicting with the new set and it's an important troubleshooting step many miss out....

I have included a link below to a tweak guide for Nvidia cards, here's what the guide says about a clean install...

Old Driver Removal

Now we move on to the simplest, and yet most commonly mishandled part of using graphics drivers - the removal of previous Nvidia graphics drivers. To do this successfully, you need to follow some simple steps which will help guarantee that your installation of the drivers is 'clean', and leads to trouble-free performance. I particularly recommend this procedure if you are experiencing graphical corruption or strange behavior. To completely remove your existing graphics drivers and all traces of them from your system do the following:

I hope this helps...

Keep us posted

Well, I can't say I've had this issue with any other game... these include games like Farcry, UT04, Oblivion, and Guild Wars all on max graphics. My issue with UT04 was a game freeze for about 5-8 seconds before it'd start working again. I can't say if this is related, but that's the only past issue I've had.

I tried 3DMark 05 and let it run while I was in class. My Nvidia driver failed during the test and I received a (I think) call time error from the program itself. My CPU was 2 of 2, but feature tests and batch size tests were both 0. I'm not sure if that's cause it crashed so it couldn't test it, but that's what the results showed with the error message. I restarted and it was fixed, but I got the usual "your computer has recovered from a serious error" message.

The first time through 3D I watched it, the first 4 scenarios had my card at about 15-35 fps, but the second time through it dropped it down to about 2-5 for the most part and I'm assuming that's when it crashed, but I can't be certain.

check your bios settings.. if ur able to flash update it.. or contact your bios manufacturer.. <sorry spelling sucks..also try to plug ur monitor into the card itself or the pc motherboard..see if it has any changes or time diffrential..in errors..whichever one its not currently plugged into..

turn off cool n quiet..when ur pc goes over a preset tempature itll kick in .causeing either slowness, stuttering,or freezing.due to resources...
spyware ,adware check.. might wanna try to set the ut3 exe to 1 cpu, instead of both ..

UT3 WAS NOT MEANT TO BE PLAY'D ON MAX SETTINGS.
they did the same thing everquest2 did aka .in the future settings.. .. they put those settings thier.for in the future comps.and. ..for people with super comps..like alienware duel 8800's so on.. and anyone telling you they play on max settings without error is either lieing..or has a comp that is equal to ut3 game desighners... that being said..
turn ur settings to lowest.. go into control panel ..nvidia control panel and set it to performance... if all else fails ..do a motherboard driver check... its a brand new game filled with errors and bugs.. most people cant even install it.. im one of the lucky peeps who can play it ..on low settings.. via nvidia..options.. if all else fails your not missing much ... the games bland boring and too easy.. just wait for them to fish the bugs out .,

Well, thats pretty unusual...What operating system are you using, Pyr?

Its potentially possible that either the frames per second was too high, or maybe it was just a semi-corrupt installation..

My computer is below the min. specs. for the game, and it runs decent...Not as good as I wanted it to be, but still enjoyable except for some quirks (missing words and letters in descriptions).

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+
2.55 GHz
1 gig RAM (using onboard VGA, so I really only get 768 MB of it for myself)
NVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 405

Also, what specific video card are you using?

If you ARE able to eventually get back in, there are some tweaks that can be done thats posted in the UT3 forums...

Try turning off abunch of graphics (like Fog, Blur, Decals, etc.) turn off Smooth Graphics, and somewhere there was something about using ATI graphic cards...Disable that, set true to Nvidia...

the games bland boring and too easy.

Yeah...I REALLY excepted more from Epic on this project...The campaign left me hanging on what happens. Was so short of a campaign..Even shorter than UT2k4!

I'm running Windows XP 32 bit with an Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT. My graphics are set on low, I know that UT3 won't be able to perform on high on my desktop. I have the game working on my laptop which is running Vista 32 bit with an Nvidia GeForce 7400. And one of the main issues Carnage is that I can't even get into a game, let alone the menu screen before a freeze. I may try a re-install tonight, but I'm still thinking it's a problem with the computer rather than the game, but we shall see.
