I don't know what the bandwidth for files and whatnot is like, but I'd be willing to set up a wiki or a closed editing system at my hosting provider to help host some files. I have 1TB of expanding bandwidth each month, and over 20GB of storage.

If this can help, should I ping someone? Or do the powers that be stroll the forums often enough?

Got in on a *killer* deal with DreamHost, a really popular and feature-packed place. The deal was - 1 year of hosting at 20GB/1TB of expanding space (meaning it goes up gradually each month), and all the features you could ever ask for (unlimited domains, subs, emails, MySQL, PHP5, etc.) for $50.

I'll actually be posting my own discount affiliate codes on my blog soon as well. PM me if you're interested.

I'm with Hostgator, have been for over a year now. Less than what you have, certainly, but great service, one problem ever (yesterday, as a matter of fact, when I lost email for about 50 minutes, and they sent out a prompt reply and handled everything really nice and quick), and it's $15. I don't have $50/mo =(

Thanks though!

No no: $50 for an entire year of the service I mentioned.

This plan is typically about $10/month with a $50 setup fee, or $130 for a year with no setup fee.

I got in on it for $50 for an entire year, no setup fee, and their affiliate program lets you give it out at that price if you want, or for even less.

Great deals, but having worked for NSPs before (a NSP sells connectivity to ISPs, and can even host them), being a long-time UNIX and Internet person (I personally helped connect hosts to what became the Internet back in the days when there were fewer than 1000 hosts), I never have been satisfied with what any site has provided me. I always want to do something more, such as Zope/Plone, compiled CGIs, etc., and so the only route I might go in the future if I do not have it in my own rack is to get a box or two and co-lo like the DC servers are.

BTW... what sort of connectivity are you looking at for that site?? You are giving 1TB as a total transfer, but I don't see quite how that could be. Do the math... even just 1 Tbit/month is an obscene amount, and is 386Kbps sustained for a 30 day period, and 4 customers would more than fill a T1. Given a T1 even at a major NAP such as Chicago runs more than $200/month (I will soon be paying $600/month for one, and that is censored cheap, given I have seen some T1's for just across Columbus being in excess of $2500/month, going into either WorldCom or Qwest's local NAP, and for one like I will have, closer to $5K if not for the fact that Verizon is eating the costs of T1s into Applachia to get nice federal tax breaks), so the math really does not make it profitable in the long run. This is true even if you start considering that most sites may only use a fraction of their bandwidth. (BTW... a good rough figure for a T1 is around 450GB (gigabytes) per month, or 3.89Tb/month). That is why, when I worked at CompuServe, we ran our own fiber loops between our data centers here in town. The 6 100Mbps fiber links in our backbone loop alone would have cost over $100K/month, and you would hate to know what the links to London, Paris and Munich would have run us (we instead contracted to have something like a couple of dozen pair of fiber run in two separate transatlantic cables, costing CSI several million...better to own it and lease dark bandwidth than to lease it ourselves, which is why WorldCom wanted to get us so badly).

I simply meant hosting files like skins, mods, maps, etc., not helping with bandwidth for the gaming server. Setting up a wiki or other type of CMS (content management system) to host these files would be far, far more organized, efficient and user-friendly than linking a bunch of stuff to ad-slimed free hosting sites all over the internets.

Spacey - T1s in DC run $700-$800/month for business-only lines. Just tossing that in

Do you guys think I should re-post this as a 'who wants a skins/maps/mods community site' topic? Or should I bug Drew or one of the others about just seting it up here under something like disasterousconsequences.com/files? Either way I'd be happy to maintain it, whether it's at my hosting or here. I just want to build an easier way for uploading and hosting stuff like the skins we use 'n whatnot.

Even if it isnt "official" if you have the diskspace for hosting all those files and it were organized it would make it a lot easier for those who want the files to get them quickly.

Ive tossed around the idea of making a servlet/jsp site that had accounts where the users could list their skins, and if you were logged in youd be able to keep track of what files you had already downloaded but school projects keep pushing it back plus I don't have the space to host each file so it would still end up as just being links to other sites.

I'm thinking of installing some kind of wiki or an open-ended blogging registration system/CMS so people can add and remove their own stuff. I'm leaning more towards a wiki because that software is typically designed to keep track of all changes, so if someone screws with something it's a lot easier to roll things back.

I have quite a bit of experience with setting up, tweaking and researching (when necessary) these kinds of systems, though I'll admit I can't write PHP blindfolded in my sleep.

So: maybe a wiki-ish system, possibly even a blog/CMS type of system to organize all the files. Thoughts?

(still in shock)

I just got word that DreamHost updated their plans today for all their customers.

I now have 200GB of space and 2TB of monthly transfer.

So.. when can I start hosting, um, every file you guys have ever made?
