Ok, I am looking at different skins/models. 2 questions. 1). What is the difference between a skin and a model? 2). If I install a model (I have my eye on one), then as long as other people have installed that model, they should be able to see it right?

Ok, I know I am a noob at skins and a mini noob at RPG, so bare with me.

O.k. 1. If you install the MODEL then put it up here people can download it and see the same thing you do like my hedgehog. 2. Even with a skin you have to post it so people can put it in there texture file folder in ut2004.So once you download your MODEL post it and we will download it and we will beable to see it hope this answers all your questions.

Think of it like this.
A 'skin' is like a new paint job on a car. A 'model' is like a new body that you put on the frame of a car. Or, skin is like human skin, where model would be the equivalent of a skeleton and muscles attached to that skeleton.

Skins are just fancy new looks for the same bodies and skeletons that come with the game. A model is when they have to design a new set of arms, legs, head, tail, extra appendages, what have you so that they can make it look the way they want to instead of just like another Juggernaut or Cybernetic player.

For this question, skins and models work the same way. No one will see them unless they have the same thing installed on their computer.

Good description, vortex, but, can you do it without simile?

For any given character, the model is the exact shape of that character. The skin is another word for the texture that's applied to the character.

To get more mileage out of models, many of UT2004's models have multiple skins. For example: the Arclite character and the Cannonball character are the same model with different skins.

I've noticed that the term "skin" is used when talking about both skins and models on this forum.

For another player to see the custom skin/models you use, they must have it installed on their computer. By "installed" I mean unzipped to the appropriate directories. Most skins you download will have instructions on where to put each file. From there you can extrapolate what goes where for any skin.

I'm such a nerd about explaining things.

Thank you folks. I am very clear on a skin vs. models now. Now I actually understand the difference. To me when looking at skins/models they all looked the same to me. I knew there had to be a difference but I was clueless (as normal).

Thank you all again for your help.
