This is both true and not true.

We do not want non-admins attempting to create or enforce the rules. The admins have a clearer picture of why the rules are and how they function. The admins have direct IM communication to us most of the time, and there are other resources about our rules that are available only to admins.

If you have implicit knowledge of how a rule works, for example, "no swearing," we much appreciate when players advise other players not to swear.

When a rule can be viewed differently in different contexts, for example, the "no derogatory terms rule," a player could mistake a non-derogatory term as a derogatory one based upon the content of the message. Unjustly telling someone they had violated this rule could be very discriminatory. Even with the best of intentions this could result in the player making these recommendations being banned for discrimination.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

This is one of those things that I should probably just chill on - but names tend to be one of those things that I'll pick at. There's been one or two that I'd have considered questionable that people have been allowed to use, due to the relative obscurity of the term (and it's use in a popular brit scifi comedy).

However, there's a clear one that someone said, "I don't know that word. Why would you object to it?"

Without checking, I said "Look it up on wikipedia," guessing that WP would have an article about it.

Next map, that person came back on and said "That's sick!" and joined me in trying to convince the player to change his name (kept insisting that he "couldn't change his name").

I can only guess that they either didn't come back or that an admin found them one day ...

Um, hmmm ... now that I think about it (and this kinda scares me), I wonder if this has something to do with Shantara's asking me if I knew Japanese ... if it does, the answer is "No, but there's no end to what you'll stumble across on the Internet, even if you're careful."

I blame Slashdot.

I debated posting this (and debated where), but I think it needs to be said.

Don't contact me (BotFodder) about administrative issues.

1) I'm not currently an admin. I know very little about what goes on - no more than anyone else could find out with a minimal amount of research (or anyone who's had to go through the procedures for contacting the admins).

2) Even if I was, there are procedures set up for admin issues, during which you are appropriately informed of the aspects of the processes that you need to know about.

It's probably not a good idea to contact someone outside of the set processes; patience will serve you much better than persistence, I'd say. And anyone who successfully got me to act on their behalf would only succeed in solidifying their ban and probably get me banned too. And I have no interest in being banned.

I think I should apologize then, as far as warning other players goes. On occasion when I'm on with a few other players and no admins are available, I'll run into someone that seems to enjoy swearing; either through the microphone, or typing it out.

If (and when) that does happen, I'll just tell them that they should try to watch what they type or say, so that they don't get kicked out. I don't pester them about it or threaten to report them or anything like that, I just give them some friendly advice and then let it go if they do or don't listen.

I aplogize if I've been overstepping my boundaries as a player.

Icey: see Dru's comment at the top. Since "swearing" is pretty clear-cut, a friendly "careful with the language - it will get you banned from the server" warning from regulars is pretty customary. Beyond that, leave it to the admins - they do a great job at enforcing the rules.

I have to agree on this.. I get ants in my pants when I don't think theres an admin on and I start to get a little into the do's and don'ts for newbies.....But I can manage without doing that in the future......We don't intend to run anyone off, we just try to let them know, the rules since they so easily forget..

When it comes to new people coming on that dont know the rules, I will try to give that person a friendly warning. I apologize if I have ever come off as pushy or rude. Most of the time if someone swears I will say the "Language (User's Name.) Eventually if the person does not listen I will just ignore it and let the admins take care of it. Sometimes i do try to warn someone more than once just to let them know that if their not careful they could get kicked/banned from the server.

I have to admit. Something that really bothers me is when people continously ask questions about what a weapon does. I try to be polite, then let them know what the weapon does. If they keep asking about other weapons I will refer them to the server's faq. There are times when a new user does not listen and keeps on asking questions. What I will do is refer them to the server's faq twice. If and then the user is still asking questions, I tell them to go to the server's faq and tell them that the players on the server are not tech support. If they have any questions refer to the server's faq. In the end I know I am not an admin. I know I am not one, and will not try to be one. If I did, that would be a one way ticket to ban city.

They should know the rules, they have to agree to them when they come into the server.

I would like to be clear that any official opinions on our rules can only come from the administrators of our server. If you need additional clarification on this, please email the admin address. If you are uncertain who the administrators on this server are, there are three ways to tell:

In-game: tags are <DC> or {DC}

In forum: if they are signed in, their name will appear on the bottom of the main forum page as yellow or green (instead of blue)

On the website: http://www.disastrousconsequences.com/dc/donate.jsp
This has a list of all of the administrators.

I'm not sure if the rules state about the engineer class and using others turrets and vehicles or adding things into a base without asking. I know that we have gotten that strait between the regular players. but I have been seeing a few new members just more or less do what they want to do by jump'n into turrets and such without asking. it has been bothering me a bit, I don't mind answering a few questions ( since I was a noob once myself) but with the badder critters it gets a lil harder to stay alive while typing!

I know some ppl do read the rules and some won't just the nature of the person.

now if anyone happens to have some script lines that would be handy to key bind to send ppl to forums or some polite reminders of said rules that I can use without getting my self into trouble will you just PM them to me and I'll set them up....( been think of doing that for a long time but have not been sure what I should do/use

I may be getting old and falling apart but I can sure can raise Hell and have fun doing it!

Alice: What a funny watch! It tells the day of the month, and it doesn't tell what o'clock it is!
The Hatter: Why should it? Does your watch tell you what year it is?
Alice: Of course not, but that's because it stays the same year for such a long time together.
The Hatter: …which is just the case with mine.

have a quick question about this. i've noticed more and more people that don't seem to come back to play showing up. i've seen one with a questionable name, someone did remind them this is a family server and to change their name, which they didn't. i almost felt tempted to kick them, but they weren't causing any in game problems besides their names so i did not. i, at times, have tried to act like a responsible representative, ie letting new players know about hitting "L" to choose a class as well as answering basic questions, just wondering if im outstepping my bounds as a player here by doing things such as suggesting classes to pick or what to spend points on based on my experience, as i know the forums have a lot of info, but is missing a lot at the same time. also, i really miss the wiki, as it was a great way to gain information easily about classes, weapons and abilities.
