A couple of months ago I built my first P.C.

Amd 64 4400 duel core
600W Enermax PSU
MSI K8N Diamond SLI MB
XFX 7800GT 256MB @ 485mhz by 1.2ghz
2G Corsair 3200 PRO
74G Raptor HD

Now with a system like this I thought that Windows XP x64 would be a good choice My problems arose after I tried to install software for a broadband modem. After some research I realised that Windows XP x64 has very limited driver support So off I went back to the shop that took 2000 Pounds (and yes that is STERLING) from me to buy Window XP 32bit. I wonder how many of you are using Windows XP x64 and how have you got arround the driver support issues, and what software e.g. Anti V, Internet Sec, connection and any other usefull tips

I'm using XP x64 and I have zero driver issues. The only 64-bit driver I even had to download was for my Audigy 2 sound card. All the others were either already supplied by windows or I had them on the discs that came with the cards.

The only issues with XP x64 that I have personally encountered:

-AVG Free edition did not work when I tried it. (Couple of months ago?)
I had to *ahem* get the full version and make it work *ahem*

-Paint Shop Pro X will not work if you have nVidia Forceware drivers between 80.xx and 82.xx I believe. I have the 77.77 drivers and it works fine. My friend has the new 84.xx drivers and they finally fixed it. I guess its just from 80.xx to 82.xx or something.

-iTunes installs a CD-ROM file of some sort that can cause certain application crashes if you leave it installed. ( I google searched 'GEARAspiWDM' and found this out. So I zipped a copy up and deleted the original and Diablo 2 hasn't crashed on me since.)

Lastly, I have found very little of the software I use has a 64-bit version as of yet. But with 32-bit CPU's going the way of the dinosaur that is likely to change very soon and I wont have to reinstall the 64-bit OS at that time.

UPDATE: It seems that if that GEAR file isnt present when my computer reboots, my dvd burner stops working and doesnt even show up in My Computer. I guess I have to just hide it when I play Diablo 2. It does not affect any other games so far that I have played though. It could be because I applied a no-cd crack on my Diablo 2.

I hate to say it, I thought I was an optimist. But if that is ZERO driver issues......I bow before your superior optimisim

One of the problems I listed isn't driver related at all and the other two I listed would not happen to most people.

The AVG problem isnt a driver issue at all, the installer program wont run under the 32-bit emulator. This is a software flaw. AVG does release new builds of their free antivirus program frequently. There is a good chance the installer has overcome this issue since I downloaded it.

The problem I have with Diablo 2 possibly wouldnt happen if I hadn't installed a no CD patch. (I did pay for the game I just hate having to leave cd's in the drive. And from what I'm told by the young people these days, almost no one plays this ancient game anyway.)

The Paint Shop Pro issue I didn't even know about because I left the original drivers that came with my video card on the computer. I only learned of it through a buddy of mine who insists on always having the latest drivers even if he doesnt experience performance problems. Plus it has been fixed in the 32 bit drivers and Im sure if it hasnt already been solved for the 64-bit drivers that it will be on the next release. So until then you just stick to the 77.77 drivers for guaranteed success.

So yes, zero driver problems. I was able to find every single driver I needed to make everything work under XP x64.

Just shows what you can accomplish with a smart choice in hardware.

Have you tried making a virtual drive from the cd? Just mount it when you want to play. No need for the no-cd patch.

You mean I really am important? How I feel when I'm drunk is correct?

Yeah I tried that once a while back. I didn't like it as much. It makes everything look so messy. An extra drive shows up in My Computer, takes up space on my hard drive.. I just like having a no cd patch.

It's no longer a problem. I don't play the game too often but when I do I just remember to move that one file somewhere else and put it back when Im done.

If you're feeling ambitious, there's a win64 patch for UT2004...

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

Yup yup!

As soon as I got x64 version of windows I've been running UT2004-x64 ever since. There is a lack of hardware audio (which I miss dearly because I have a Soundblaster card and a 5.1 speaker setup and I do notice the difference) but otherwise the game still runs great.

There is no real obvious performance difference though.
I think of it as 'support for 64 bit' but not 'this runs better on 64 bit'.
