Can't open a UT map in 3ds max. Different file types - .ase and .ut2.

Use Maya PLE anyway.

That being said, I make models in Maya so I can export them to UED for my maps. I can answer most general 3d gfx software questions. I used 3ds max for a while when 4 was brand new, so I have a sort of background. What are you trying to do?

He's trying to open ut models in max, not maps. I'm not too sure. I know there's a plugin for exporting to the editor, but I don't know if there's a reverse way to do it. You can use max, I actually played around with gmax a bit a while ago and liked it more than maya, but since I'm too lazy to pirate 3ds max and too poor to get it legitimately, i just used Maya. Maya will have more tutorials and such, since it's the primary modeling program for UT. I think angelmapper might have some tutorials on her site (www.angelmapper.com) because I know she uses max. Good luck, and show us some of your work when you're done

In talking with a friend (who does graphics editing professionally) when my wife was looking for 3ds to do some work for a game she plays, he said that at least for the full versions, Maya was the one which was the best in more areas. Unfortunately, there were no plugins to export Maya to that game, and of course, MayaPLE is not the full version, but...

As for 3ds, which version do you have?? He said there were some good books out there for 3ds, and if you let us know which version you have, I can check to see if your version is covered by those books.

BTW you might find the ActorX plug-in useful... use the command 'axmesh' while the plugin is loaded to export meshes n whatnot to UED, just make sure they are triangulated first

All the origional characters can be downloaded in 3ds or max format (forget which one) I'll look and see if I cant come up with a link.

oh and I think they require that you have the character studio plugin installed.

other than that you can d/l milkshape 3d and export the characters out of it into 3ds format or just about any other format you could want.

Found them

http://www.fileplanet.com/113683/110000/fileinfo/UT2K3-Character-Source

Or you can search fileshack.com for unreal character source.

Ive only found the ut2003 source but the ones for 2004 are out there somewhere.
