you know boingo the needle valves in the jets were probably all gummed up. that used to happen to my little Suzuki every winter. Smaller bikes are really good to learn on, but stepping up from them especially to cruisers is a whole 'nother learning process. its night and day going from a little 500 twin to a 1400 cc 650 pound touring/cruising bike.

If the jets are still gummed up, would that cause the throttle to stick? Well, it doesn't stick, it just takes too long to get back to where it should be. I don't know how many times I've taken those carbs apart, cleaned them out and put them together again. I've let them soak in carb cleaner, then I finally bought the parts and rebuilt them. It runs better than it did, but not quite good enough. I had fun spending time with the ol' daddy-o learning how to do all this stuff too.

And I bet you're right about switching, which is why I'm thinking I should just go straight to a used cruiser. It wouldn't be a 1400 cc, the one I like is only 583 cc and the dry weight is only 458 lbs. I wouldn't be adding much weight because I don't plan on going on long trips until I'm practically an expert...just to cruise around town and look cool. Make all the boys jealous, you know.

Thats probably a really good way to go Boingo! As for the throttle sticking when it should be idling down, you might want to check on the choke. A stuck or sticking choke will definately cause the throttle to throttle down more slowly sometimes if at all. I used to use my choke as acruise control when tooling around.

hey Boingo, when you rebuilt the carb, did you do a total rebuild or just replace some of the parts? The jets wouldn't get plugged up fast like that after a rebuild unless there was something going on with the fuel itself or hte fuel filter was old or not even there. There could be junk in the gas tank that gets into the carb. I would agree with cpl on the choke, though. A stuck choke will cause sypmptoms like that. Are carbs on bikes basically the same layout as those in cars?

I'll have to try that. You said you had a Suzuki, do you still have it?

I just replaced all the trinkets inside, so I didn't really rebuild them. When I got the bike from my uncle the gas left in the tank (for 20 years) and hoses evaporated and the hard deposits were left behind. I have a friend who works at a car dealership and he took the gas tank and let it sit in carb cleaner all day. He took the carbs and said the gaskets just dissolved, so I had no choice but to buy replacement parts, since they didn't exist anymore. I'm not sure if the carbs on bikes are the same as cars. Especially, since the one I've got is a '71. They probably have the same basic idea, but I really don't know. I've never had to do anything with a carburetor from a car.

all carbs are basically the same car bike or mower. except for the craptacular electronic carbs from the 80's.
