Pyra, this seems to be a video card issue. I believe it will be one of these things.

1) Bad contacts. Re-install your video card and power plug, making sure there is no lint or dust interfering with them. Check the motherboard and power plug for broken or bent pins. While you're at it, check your video cable for breaks or kinks.

2) Overheating. Download these utilities to see your temps in windows.
For CPU temp readings get Core Temp here http://www.alcpu.com/
For your video card temps, just use the nVidia monitor utility that shipped with your card. You can access it from the program menu (if you installed it). If you don't have it, you can get it here http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.54.00.html
Check your temps. 65-70 degrees begins to enter the trouble zone for cpus. Although GPU's can generally handle a bit more, I use the same temps for them as well. cplmac had a temp prob with his video card causing game freezes, and got all better with a little extra cooling.

3) Improper driver installation. Before you install your shiny new graphics drivers, nVidia recommends you uninstall your current drivers. Go to your control panel, click on add/remove programs, select nvidia drivers. Make sure you select 'remove only the following', and then choose Display Driver. Click ok, reboot when asked, and viola, you're ready to install your new drivers!
FYI: your screen will look funny until you reset your resolution. Don't change it back until you install the new drivers and reboot.

4) Defective video card. Try a different video card (if you have access to one) and see if your problems go away. You'll know the answer then. Don't try this until you have exhausted all other options. If necessary, buy a card at your local Best Buy, and return it if it doesn't solve the problem. Check with the store first, but I believe you'll still get a full refund for the item.

5) Motherboard issues. This is quite a bit more involved, and varies according to the mainboard series and manufacturer. To avoid guessing, and creating confusion, this should be handled at an im level. pm me if you need to pursue this option.

6) Corrupt Windows installation. If I even suspect this to be the problem, I don't bother to try diagnosing it, since that usually ends up taking as much time as actually re-installing the OS. You know what to do.

7) Faulty monitor. I saved this for last, since I believe this possiblity to be the most remote. Try a different monitor, and see if that cures your difficulties.

Good luck! Hope this helps out.

Thanks SteelAce, I'm slowly working on trying different solutions, but I've been really busy with school so keeping my computer up has been vital. I ran the Nvidia monitor utility while I had 3DMark05 running. My GPU temp started at 45 degrees and by a quarter of the way through it hit 71 degrees when the screen did its diagonal lines thing. The computer didn't technically freeze, but my left monitor turned off and went into "power saver mode" and my right screen struggled to keep from completely freezing. During the test, my CPU stayed at 50% and never moved. I tried the CPU temp program, however it says my processor is not an Intel Core Processor which I found to be odd especially since the program says it works with all solo cores.

So it looks like a video card issue again, can you get fans or different cooling methods for such cards? I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but could it be possible that the power supply cannot power the video card and my new cpu fan? Anyway, thanks everyone for the suggestions, It's a work in progress

Just curious, are you sure the fan is working on the gpu? (all the time, i mean) I ask, because my fan would vary it's rpm's via the drivers according to load and heat, but i found that it let it get too hot before it set the fan to full rpm's.
If you downloaded ntune from nvidia, on the menu somewhere should be a section about overclocking. In there you can check a box that should make the fan run at full rpm's all the time. (make's for a little more noise, but <shrugs>

Hmm, it was only at 50% and automatic.... I changed it to 100% and ran 3DMark05 again. It slowly climbed up to 68 before I quit the program. It seemed to be trying to counteract the heat, but still ended up with the same result.

update: I'm not sure how this happened, but this situation has gotten worse. I installed a microsoft update and restarted this evening. It booted like normal and I logged in. After logging in I see my desktop and icons, but then it freezes and goes to full grey with black diagonal lines. These lines are much different, in that they take up the whole screen and they are not pixelated. I don't think I can do much anymore, seems like my computer has kicked the bucket, unless I reformat or find a faulty piece of equipment.... I'm hoping for a magical fix in the morning, but we will see.

Most likely its the video card cuz i have a 8800 GT video card and UT3 runs just fine with no lag. And i know someone who had the 7800 GT and had the exact same problems, so my advice is to upgrade your video card.

I heard today that the new nVidia unified driver is screwing things up. If you have the latest driver you might want to try rolling it back.

The Epic forums have been very helpfull, tho its a time involved troubleshooting ordeal. There are a listing of known issues and possible solutions in the Troubleshooting area for UT3. Mine all this time was the "UT3 has encountered an error and has to exit" error upon startup, wouldnt even get a splash screen of any type, just loose video signal for a bit, then back to the desktop. Most frustrating, even after the 1.1 patch installed. The last thing I tried fixed and I'm up and running after 1 week of agony.

There is a sticky you can read of known issues and plenty of comments of those with issues, possibly the same as yours. No shortage of info to get you back in the game.

Oh, on another forum just regarding issues with the 7 series NVIDIA cards, one person reccomended not to use the new forceware drivers, but to use the 93.71 instead as the new ones have the 7 series as compatible, they aren't optimized and have stability and framerate issues. You can try that, it fixed my issue with UT2K4 when I made that crash with the new drivers.

Well it turns out that it was indeed the video card. I got sort of a trade in deal and bought an Nvidia Geforce 8600GT. I am finally able to play UT3 now... let alone have a working computer.... but hopefully you'll see me online a bit more often! Thanks again for all the help and advice!

I couldn't find these settings in UT3, what screen step do I take to get there?

Also, what ".ini" file stores the keybindings? I want to try to make my TAB be the enter vehicle key.

My only suggestion for your card freezing is if it's overclocked too much you'll get that too.

glad you got it resolved... when i saw your pictures i immediately knew your graphics card was hosed... this usually occurs when the memory chips have overheated one-too-many times and have corrupted the circuitry within... the GPU can still process information, but it's corrupted when loading into, or dumping from, the memory chips...

sorry man, glad you got it fixed though

I really appreciate the suggestions... I disabled my sound card and rebooted with the beta drivers installed. The game's settings are at Texture 2 and World 2 so I'm not demanding too much from my system. This time around it lasted all the way up until I tried loading a game then it did it's screen freeze. I tried adjusting the heat warning in my bios, however it became passworded from the last time I brought it into the shop... so that option is out for a bit and I don't really want to remove the battery to get rid of it hehe. Once it crashed again I left it off for two hours and it took 3 reboots to get going without the lines. Here are the pictures of the screen once it crashes.

I have a feeling I will be bringing it in to be fixed, I kind of believe this is just a continuation of the problems I was having a few months ago that I thought were fixed...

Those are cool pics (srry about your prob)
