This is no reason (not to say you didn't... just spreading the word) not to contact your senator. Politics can change as the winds, and the battle for freedom will never end. If you want a non-discriminatory internet. I implore you to contact your state Senators and Representives.

The fundamental problem is this: The first word we learn as children is NO. From that point forward society teaches women that saying no isn't polite, and society teaches men to respect those who wont take no for an answer.

This is what Shantara and I sent to our congresspeople:

The Letter wrote:

Greetings <Congressperson>

We are writing to you to express our concern over Internet neutrality, or "Net Neutrality".

Since the beginning of our government, our way of life, our constitution of the United States, we have supported the freedom of speech, and we are deeply concerned about movements that attempt to suppress those freedoms on the Internet. We feel that the motions of individuals, organizations, and corporations to supplant these freedoms, by imposing their own agendas may be one of the most subversive attempts to compromise these freedoms.

First, some background on us.

I, <TheDruidXpawX> am a Software Architect for TwelveHorses, an Internet software solutions provider here in the valley.

I, <Shantara> am studying for my PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Utah.

We own a local online gaming community which promotes clean, non-discriminatory, family oriented gameplay. We created this online community because, while we like to play online games, we often found that it was difficult to wade through the discrimination and derogatory terms often found in online games. We decided to take action, and become a service provider of an online game so that we could prevent that sort of behavior from entering our home while still enabling us to enjoy the online camaraderie from such a community.

We primarily support this community out of our own pocket, however we do receive donations from local contributors in Utah, as well as contributors from across the nation. We have numerous players from Utah, across the US, as well as from a few other places across the world.

We give you this background to help you understand that we're well versed in the Internet, from both an end-user perspective as well as a service-provider perspective.

We are able to provide this clean, family oriented gameplay because of the current freedoms of the Internet.
1) A relatively small operation with sufficient knowledge can start up their own Internet community, service, or online presence, with relative ease.
2) No large organization can deny their users access to our service.

If we had to compete on monetary terms with large Internet gaming providers for access to the Internet backbone, we would simply have to shut down our community.

Our concerns reach far beyond our own microcosm. We are concerned that in a tiered Internet, or an Internet where the large providers can decide what content their users can receive, competition will be highly discriminatory both in terms of finance as well as the message contained within the content. We can envision an Internet where a provider like Comcast might ally itself with one political party, and censor any content not in-line with that political parties message. It might hold the other political party ransom, forcing them into a bidding war, or it might simply deny their content on principal.

We believe that if legislation passes allowing the large providers to tier the Internet in this fashion, that we will essentially be handing the control over our freedoms of speech on the Internet to private corporations and private interests.

As a <some personalized information here>, we implore you to protect our rights and freedom of speech on the Internet. We ask that you prevent large corporations from quashing the voice of small communities, and small companies by ensuring our equal footing on the Internet.

If you have any questions, or would like to tap our knowledge on this topic any further, we would welcome any discussion which would assist your understanding of these issues.

Thank you for your time,

<Our Sig>

As Dru said, follow the links and let your voice be heard by the people who are supposed to be representing you in the Senate and House of Representatives. Like Dru and Shan, I sent in my letters. I did so long ago, and mentioned in them that I have worked on the Internet since before it was called that (pointing out that I helped get the first hosts at Ohio State on the net back when there were only around 900 nodes on the entire network, routers and switches included), and that I also worked for what was at the time the worlds largest ISP, CompuServe, back in the heyday. I expressed my concerns, gave them detailed facts about why things need to be guarenteed in this area, AND I HAVE WRITTEN SEVERAL FOLLOW-UPS. What is more, I added a link on my own site to help raise the awareness of the folks who happen into my domain. (I have also written a number of other letters, and my representatives are probably tired of seeing my name, knowing that I am not happy with the job they are doing. As for the ones running against them this fall...they know and recognize me.)

Good job Dru and Shan, and all the others who have already written in. And for those who have not but have posted here about being worried...do so now before it is too late.

It only covers it if you wrote your congresspeople.

Take a look here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/335672945

Seems like a reputable site, this is in no way a replacement for a written letter, but it may help. Make sure you scroll all the way down and read the petition itself so you know what you are signing.

If you would, take a quick moment to watch this commercial:

Apparently this is a live tv commercial running in our United States right now.

http://www.ncta.com/ContentView.aspx?ContentID=3526

If at the end of watching it you still aren't outraged enough to write your congress people, then you need to get yourself more informed.

If you don't take action on your own behalf to protect the freedoms the you enjoy, no one else will.

Vote with your money as well. Root out companies that dont support net neutrality and get away from them to companies that do. If your ISP wants to segregate the internet like this, choose another ISP.

Once again, the DisastrousConsequences.com community, small internet businesses, and the freedom from discrimination on the internet may not survive without net neutrality.

The ISP's are feeling the noose tighten around them and know the public does not like the idea of Tier 1 and Tier 2. I am going to keep fighting and do whatever I can to pass on the word and keep up. I'm curently making a large sig for anyone that wants a copy of it. It's going to be a little while before I am done.
