Since its close to Christmas, I thought I'd start a new thread. What is everyone's favorite tradition for this time of year? And if you feel like typing, how did it begin?

Every year on Christmas Eve, my family gets Chinese take-out and then we watch A Christmas Carol before hanging our stockings and being sent to bed. We used to just get burgers (I remember being younger and eating Happy Meals from McDonald's) but one year Mom got the flu. She started feeling a little better and the only thing that sounded good was Chinese and we've been doing it ever since.

I can't even tell you when we started watching A Christmas Carol, we've been doing that for as long as I remember.

Next?

Every year (well most) my siblings, jerk, lump, and john exchange our gifts on the eve. We wouldnt mind staying up really late talking, laughing and having fun in general. Cookies were made all the time and then my oldest sister would return home and wait until till the next day. I would soon goto sleep and (like the little kid inside of me) would wake up REALLLLY early in the morning and wake everyone else up in my house. We wouldnt be able to go downstairs yet because we had to wait for breakfast inorder to open our gifts. Once breakfast was served I would always have one of my animals in my hands and go downstairs and sit them by me. We would open our presents and soon our oldest sister would arrive. Once we were finished with our unwrapping of the gifts. And when the "Special" Gifts (if not given to eachother the night before) were unwrapped which took about 10 minutes because of all the layers . We would all go and start cooking so we could bring it to our grandmother's house. about 3-3:30 we would all have showered and be out the door. Snow or not the family arrives one by one all with food for the christmas celebration at the grandmas. The Apps. would be first followed some 3 or so courses later then finally desert we were allowed to open our gifts. However we do this in age order being 16 im wayyyy up that line (out of my grandmother' 13 grandchildren im the 5th oldest) and then we would have a loud and really fun game of pictionary. About 10 o'clock we head home and do inventory of what we had received. Soon we would all settle back into our beds and wait until the next day to put everything away

Well, when my Dad was alive one of the best traditions we had was when he would kick my mom out of the kitchen and he would bake apricot horns all day long (I would help by sampling at least 2 with him from every batch. ).
But my all time favorite, which I still do today and have been doing since I was like 6, is early on christmas morning getting up and making coffee and serving it to everyone on/in a silver set that my grandfather gave me, along with crumpets (horns then, now pop can cinnimmon rolls. I think I will try making those horns this year though.)

Growing up, my siblings and I could open one gift on the eve, and being that it was chosen by my mother, it was usually a coat, socks or some such crap. This created quite a bit of suspense for the next morning and, I realize now, was a method to get us into bed early so the 'grownups' could play cards, etc. without the young 'uns hanging on shirt tails. So I got the brunt of gifts on Christmas Day.

When I married, my wife's tradition growing up was just the opposite. They opened everything on the eve and travel everywhere and see everyone on Christmas Day. Boy did we clash and fuss about that. To make a long story short, I caved and let her have her way. So for the last thirteen years, we have opened all gifts on the Eve, and I have had to lump it. Well this year I got even.

Charolette (my wife) and Kollette (my 18 yr old daughter) both got to scheming and decided to make plans for Christmas Eve, therefore having to open all the gifts on Christmas Day. Charolette, thinking I would be happy to finally get a Christmas the way I was raised, didn't think I would mind. Well, since she forced her way on me for thirteen years, I am forcing her to stick with it and made them both unplan their plans. Do you think I am jsut being mean, or enjoying being mean. Muaahahahahah

These are great, you guys! Keep 'em coming! I'm totally enjoying reading everyone's different traditions!

Em, I've heard of horns, but have never seen/eaten one. Are they pastries?

And Chyster.....I just had to giggle at your's. I'd say you're enjoying being mean! Why didn't you both give in a little at the beginning and open half the gifts on Christmas Eve and half the next day? I'm all about happy mediums.

Our Christmas tradition is pretty much the same now as it was when I was growing up. On xmas eve we have a pretty easy dinner or take-out because us women know we're going to have to cook and bake a feast the next day, then I get everything we need out of the cabinets to make sugar cookies for Santa. My kids "help" make the batter then we roll it out and cut shapes out with cookie cutters, and bake em. After they cool we frost them and decorate them and put them aside. Then we each get to open one gift while listening to the movie "A Christmas Story" in the backround cuz it is usually put on after/during dinner. After the kids have opened thier gifts and set out a plate of cookies for Santa we do one last thing, we get out the "reindeer food" that we always make a couple weeks before either in school or home, and we sprinkle it on the lawn for Santa's reindeer. The kids are sent to brush teeth and go to bed. Us adults play you know who and are usually up pretty late filling stockings and putting out a Santa gift for each of the kids.
Then of course the next morning everyone is up early for breakfast and gift opening. Then we cook a nice yummy feast with the works, eat around 1 or 2 pm and hang out, play games, help kids put together new toys and just relax and have a good time as a family.

Yeh, they are a pressed dough (very cold and very thin, layered several times) make a 3x3 square, put filling in, then fold two kitty corner corners towards each other, one over the other. Bake...Powder with 10x sugar.... Eat.... Eat..... eat...

Traditional fillings are a cheese cake like filling, lekvare (prune compote substance, yuck ) and apricot (my favorite), and a nut filling. I think I will try some raspberry and strawberry preserves as fillings when I try to make them.

Apparently you have not been introduced to my wife. She is all about black and white, no shades of gray allowed. I had actually offered the very compromise you stated quite some years ago, but was denied. So this is why my horns are sticking out this year. But, they are needed to hold up my halo.

Sounds alot like what I call a scone or turnover. Its all good though (cept for the prunes, I gotta agree with Em on those). I also consider apricot one of my favorites too.

Hey Sub, its cool you fix food for the reindeer! Hobo and I used to leave 9 carrots with Santa's cookies (when we were younger) for them to eat.

Hmmm, Em, feel free to send me some of your holiday baking.

And Chyster, make sure your halo is level on those horns of your's.

Is everybody's shopping done? I only have a couple gifts left to wrap!!

Christmas Eve used to be spent at my friend's house each year. All of us would exchange gifts at that time and would then just hang out there for the rest of the night. It was really fun being around everyone at the same time.

I don't know if this is a tradition for everyone, but I tend to wait until the very last minute (or at least the last 3 days) before Christmas to get presents. The parking at the shopping mall is ghastly at that time, and that leads me to my second tradition, paying my friends in burgers to camp out across the street from the mall at the Wendy's parking lot. I have a list for what I plan to get but for some reason I never get around to it until it's really close. Remember kids, shopping last minute at Wal-Mart is only two shades of shame away from last minute shopping at Walgreens

Another tradition I have is go to the mall the day before christmas eve and just hang out and watch the crazyness. It's hilarious to watch some of these people shop, you get a real education on human behavior in a stress filled situation!
