Computer Tweeks for UT2K4

I would love to tweek my computer for game play but I have no clue as to what to do. Any suggestions?

I havent really needed to "tweek" my computer for good performance. I just try to keep programs in the background to a minimum. if its a performance issue where you are dropping frames, the easiest solutions are to tone down your graphics enhancements, like anisotropic filtering model detail etc. otherwise you can always overclock the video card, ram, and CPU. or just get more ram and a beefier card. :shock:

Is this the new computer you were talking about that you just put together? From what I remember you said you had in it for hardware, I wouldn't think you would need to worry about anything. Anyway, I agree with what Taco said about doing the overclocking. Just don't do too much, though. I would just try small incriments to see how it affects your computer. I'm not totally sure, but I've read that the RAM is the bottleneck in your computer. I'm going to try overclocking that first on mine when I get down to it. Supposedly, the RAM I have is made for doing that. I'm sure with your setup, you wouldn't have anything to worry about.

I have done some overclocking on my son's computer for him (1 ghz celeron, 768 pc 100 ram, fx 5200 nvidia, blah, blah) I upped the freq. on the host clock in increments like was stated earlier, managed to get it running at 1.8 ghz or there abouts. after that memory exceptions started to happen and random reboots, etc. Oh, and if you do overclock, make sure you have plenty of cooling ability!!! Both on your cpu and your ram, heat is your main killer. (I have a double sized copper heatsink on his cpu, and 4 extra fans in his case [2 in and 2 out] moving about 150 cfm over the ram slots and venting out the top) Have fun with it, but be carful and keep an eye on it, strange things might begin to happen, if they do turn it down a little before you fry your stuff!

bah to your extra cooling. my radeon 8500LE is overclocked with NO exrea cooling. core: from 250 to 287 ram: 250 to 257 ...... so my O/C ability sux. sue me. :) thinking about overclocking my processor (ive got an OLDSCHOOL copper heatsink about 4 inches squared that i can use) but im deathly afaraid of blowing my CPU. how should i go about o/cing (moderatly safly) my cpu? (its a celron 1.1 ghz. my PC is a compaq evo D300MT with the clock multiplier NOT LOCKED DOWN) -=BuG=-

Do you really get that much more speed out of it to make it worth the risk?

I really sounds cool actually!!! it spools up like a dc-9 :-o :-o I swear, when he's really fraggin out, the thing hovers..!!

Hey Bug, if your machine is working ok, I would probably just leave it alone. Right now, I think your biggest bottleneck is going to be that pc133 ram you're using, although a 1.1ghz celeron isn't helping matters. Unfortunately, I doubt your motherboard can use ddr or rdram. You might think about saving up for another rig, because any tweaking you can effect will have a minimal impact on your game performance, and could smoke what you have. Check around; I believe you can pick up a 2+ Ghz AMD system w/512 MB ddr pretty cheap. You do that, and your performance will skyrocket.

Check out www.newegg.com - they have pretty good prices and you could pick up mobo/cpu/mem for a nice upgrade and keep the rest. Although depending on your current video card, you may want to upgrad it too if possible.

im actuailly quite content with my current system now. im getting another 256 stick of that horrible pc133 SD, taking my system to its max of 512 ram. once i get some cash saved up im going to dump a bigger video card into my system. i think your right dru the risk in O/cing my cpu isnt worth it. i tried moving the clock multiplier but nothing happened... apparantly i would have to "volt mod" my cpu... FORGET THAT! id rather just get more power in other places. i know where my systems bottlenecks are, and there not that bad. a REALLY good winXP tweak guide is "Windows XP: from reformat to relax" http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=review&dId=324 and "Windows Xp, From Relax to Righteous" http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=review&dId=434 there good stuff. print em out, format ur system, follow them to completeion and ghost your HD. bam. tweaked system, never need to rebuild it fully again. n-joy. -=BuG=-

lol figured out another bottleneck... apparantly the person who owned my 8500LE before me was an O/c nubie like me, as he underclocked it. is: 250/250 supposed to be 275/300 lol mabie once i fix this things will improve hehehehe o my ram arrived too so my ssy is 512 now, and most, if not all, of my system problems have exaporated. (well, except for my horrible spelling :) ) -=BuG=-
