Dead Space review (360)

Quick review of Dead Space for the 360.

Graphics: Hands-down the best looking game I've seen on the 360....period. Stunning visuals.

Sound: Sound is terrific, although I will say that unless you have at least a 5.1 surround system, the sound score suffers a bit. The creepy atmosphere is enhanced immensely by the surround sound.

Gameplay: Very well thought out. No HUD to speak of, but the concept is pulled off brilliantly. No HUD actually adds to the overall sense of dread and fear because it forces you to concentrate on everything around you with no distraction from a HUD.

The missions can be a bit simplistic, but the developers more than make up for it with the variety of weapons, abilities and exploration.

Bottom line: I'm a big fan of games that make you jump, instill a genuine sense of fear, and are just plain scary. I've been gaming since the days of Odyssey, Intellivision, Applle II, and the Commodore. Only twice before have games made me creeped out the way Dead Space does: the original Doom, and the original Resident Evil.
If you want a great looking, great sounding, and downright scary game, then pick up Dead Space. DEFINITELY NOT for the kiddies.

Oh, and there's nothing like playing it with the lights off and the surround sound cranked up.... :)

Yeah ive seen the commercials on it and the game itself seems nice, the only thing that I dont like about it is that I have this idea that it is not a 1st person shooter. I dislike 3rd person games since it is harder to aim, play, and well for me have fun; so my question is, is it a 1st person shooter game?

Re:Dead Space review (360)

It is in third person. Normally I feel the way you do about 1st person vs. 3rd perspective, but it works for this game. I didn't have any trouble adapting to the movements or aiming in third person view. They did a great job making the weapons easy to aim by including laser sighting and other accommodations.

In reality I think the developers chose third person perspective for reasons I touched on in my review. If you go with first person perspective, you HAVE TO include some type of HUD, which would have severely detracted from the atmosphere and intensity of the game.

To say that there is no type of HUD-like interface at all isn't accurate. Your map, inventory, and objectives are all displayed in real time via a "holographic" display which is projected into your character's viewpoint. It's hard to describe, but it works very well.

If you are an absolute die-hard FPS player who just cannot bring themself to play anything in 3rd person perspective, I guess this game may not be for you.

I'd say at least give it a rental and play through the first 2-3 chapters to get a real feel for it. I think you will enjoy it more than you think.

So I got Dead Space with my Xmas money and it rocks. :D I love how creepy it is cause it makes me go a little slower in the game watching out for them creepy crawlers. However I'm stinking it up in the game where you have to shootdown all the asteroids flying towards the ship. The weapons are pretty dang sweet. There's only two I'm not a big fan of, one of them is the disc throwing one and the other is that one weapon that's kind of long and shoots a beam. So I'm kind of stuck on the shoot the asteroid part of the game. Any who that's it for me on this one. Awesome graphics, cool story line and almost like it's anime movie counterpart.

Ya im a first person shooter myself too, but when I played dead space on pc WHOA!! it was incredible instead of going slow i somehow got a sense of adrenaline and went really fast through the game but of course very cautiously ( I'd like turn around the corner and BOOM before the monster could even do anything) I liked the game so much I played it twice over keeping the weapons upgraded... oh and if your stuck at the asteroids, boy do you still have half of the story line to go its awesome. And I dont want to spoil it for you so have fun and good luck with it :D

Finally Got past the shooting down the asteroids part and finished the game. Woooooooooooot!!!!. Now I'm on round two with that same character. The Force Gun is awesome. Gives me time to shoot before they get back up. All in all Dead Space is an awesome game and the movie it's made after is also a good one. I use the very first gun you get when you get into the game and the forcegun most often.
