Obscure or Little Known Bands...

Well I am a big fan of unheard of bands, often they are some of the most creative. I just bought a cd by a band named Under the Influence of Giants and it's incredible. It's a mix of the Bee Gees and The Killers first cd. They're slowly becoming more known, but they're fantastic. Another would be Waterbone, which is a Tibetan band. It's very soothing and entrancing which is great when I need to just relax to something. I'm always looking for new bands, so what are some bands everyone listens to that aren't known that well?

Oh I think I've heard of Under the Influence of Giants recently.

Not sure if this band is obscure enough to qualify, but I like Mae. It's kinda emo and sounds vaguely like Death Cab for Cutie (though if you listen to each back to back they won't seem very alike... Death Cab is the only way I could describe em).

Shiny Toy Guns

They are a bit of techno-pop fluff.....but mostly well done fluff. Their single "Le Disko" is gaining steam on some of the less-mainstream radio airwaves.

Their sound is a mish-mash of 80's influenced pop like Depeche Mode, the spacy-ness of the Flaming Lips "....Pink Robots" album, and the catchy dance rythms that one would find on an electronica/house album.

Worth checking 'em out if you are into that style of music.

Re:Obscure or Little Known Bands...

Ugh I'm thrilled with some of these bands... Love the Tangerine Dream Bot, it actually sounds like you're under the water in some of their songs which is really quite neat. I checked out just a few of Wombat's but I really like Elis and Pyramaze... they sound a bit like Dream Theater, Vanden Plas, and Evergrey mixed together (love all three of the bands :-D ). The other one that's beginning to grow on me is Electricians suggestion of Shiny Toy Guns... they're a bit odd, but they remind me of Depeche Mode, but much more pop-ish, which I like. Thanks for the suggestions, can't wait to slowly collect more music B-) ...

I have found a few new bands in the past few weeks. One being Vanden Plas which is a progressive metal band much like Dream Theater. Another band I've come to enjoy is The Panic Division. They use some electronic in the backround, and have some great vocals. My last band that I found about 2 years ago before they had a cd out is called Dropping Daylight. They use a mix of metal with piano/keyboard to create a very unike sounding rock band. I am a big fan of this band and highly recommend them!

Re:Obscure or Little Known Bands...

Ok... You want obscure, I have one which is obscure, but with a twist, and then another artist I just found via a friend of mine, Loretta, from back in my Ohio State days on MySpace. And I will say, even the first group has a personal connection to myself. Here ya go.

First, how many of you remember a song, Smoke on the Water? The group was Deep Purple, and it was released in 1973. One of the members of the band was Richie Blackmore. Well, these days, he is playing with a group called Blackmore's Night, which plays, as Richie puts it... Renn and Roll. :) The personal connection... Some months ago, Richie and I had an extended discussion regarding things like their web sites, the SCA, their albums and such.

The second one is an group from here in Columbus, The Azoic, which is a electronic dance/industrial EBM group. You can also find the group on MySpace, with Kristy's personal page located here.

Blackmore's Night is one of those groups I have been playing so much I have been rubbing the bits off my harddrive. Unfortunately, some of the songs right now are more painful than an icepick to my heart, given the lyrics and how they applied to my friendship with Lisa/Spammy (one of them set me to a few minutes of howling/crying yesterday). It may be a few weeks before I can play them without problems.

As for The Azoic... well, the past year or so, I have been really getting into artists like DJ Tiesto (sp...cannot get the dots on the e), Miss Kittin, Alice Deejay, and others. Of course, if you ever took at my Yahoo Launch rated songs listing (start at my personal web page profile, go to music, and go from there), you would find I like songs that pretty much the whole spectrum. But being a local group, I may see if I can find some more of their music, or **GASP** go to one of their performances, if they ever do one locally. :)

A tidbit of trivia from the days of Deep Purple I learned some years ago...

The first time Smoke on the Water was publicly played was in Japan.
When they opened with that familiar riff we all love there was a power outage on stage (was drawing too much power or something) and the fade that is part of that signature riff was born. It was such a huge hit with the fans, they had to force that affect in future perfomances...

and now you know....the rest of the story. :(|)

Came across a great semi-new artist.

Amy Winehouse.

She's something of an anomaly in the music world today. She sounds like nothing else around. Imagine a cross between Ella Fitzgerald, Ronnie Spector, and 60's female soul/R&B. Sprinkle in some jazz and great lyrical content and you have Amy Winehouse.

Just bought her new album Back to Black. "Rehab" and "You Know I'm No Good" are two of the highlights of the album, but honestly there are only one or two tracks that are a bit weak....and even those aren't too bad. All I can say is, go out and buy it. It is one of the best albums of the last few years. At the very least, give it a listen and see what you think.

Yeah, if you like buckethead/primus, Claypool has quite a few side projects. Some others to check out:

Oysterhead
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains
Sausage
Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel

Some are really good! Oysterhead puts Les in with Stewart Copeland from the Police, and Trey Anastasio from Phish. An interesting mix, but if you like claypool, you'll love this stuff.

As for SR-71, I love 'em! I thought it was sad that they got bombed as a pop-punk band because of their first single. The rest of that CD sounds so much different (and better, imho) than "Right Now". I love that whole album. Their latest one was great too. Too bad they didn't make it... :-(

This week has been all about Bright Eyes for me tho. They have a new CD comin out on the 10th of Apr. w00t!

cheers.

Wow dude, awesome find! Love Sleepthief, very mellow and tasty! Blue Stone is pretty cool too, but almost too "club" sounding...Kindof a Delerium meets t.A.t.U. feeling :)

Sleepthief's cover of Send Me an Angel from Scorpions was awesome tho! Takes a lot of talent to cover a rock song in electronica, they pulled it off well, imho!

You may want to give Amethystium or Conjure One a listen as well, fits into the same genre. Conjure One is actually the side project of the female vocalist from Delerium, awesome stuff!

Still not too sure bout this guy tho...maybe he'll grow on me. "Spider" from the May album was pretty cool.

My find for this week: Russian Circles.
They're an instrumental metal trio. Very very cool stuff, opening for Tool's UK tour.

I have three new albums that have really impressed me. I can't say that I really enjoy the bands, but these single albums have really stood out.

The first from a band named Stars and their album "In Our Bedroom After the War." The album won't be released on cd till September *sigh*, but it has been digitally distributed through say... itunes. It has a dark and mellow sound that really keeps me interested. I can't wait to buy the cd when it comes out.

The second album is "The Con" by Tegan and Sara. This is very unique. I haven't been a big fan of this group, but I've really enjoyed this album. It's been supported by Death Cab for Cutie and Weezer. It's worth a listen, especially since it's easy to tell if you're going to like this band after the first listen.

The last album is "23" by Blonde Redhead. I'd have to say that this album sounds like Keane mixed with Ladytron. It's also dark and mellow like Stars, but I love this album immensely.

Very cool find, these guys rock! Thanks for the tip! If you dig these guys, you may also dig:

More groovy/funky than Kiss Kiss, also a very talented violinist, great live show as well!

No actually I meant the bad kind of realization. Take Maroon 5's new CD. On the surface it sounds like weird 80's pop-ish, but listen to the lyrics towards the end of the CD and... ewww. Not recommended.

Mmmm....Savatage.... Streets still gives me chills. Check out Circle II Circle, it's Zak Stevens' (ex-frontman of Savatage) new band, they have 3 albums out, very cool, very Savatage sounding tunes!

Also in metal land, Iced Earth just released a new album this month, Framing Armageddon. Listened to it on Rhapsody, now I must go buy it! Very very cool stuff, branches off the story of their earlier release 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.

And, in other genre: Blaqk Audio. Kinda dark electronica stuff, like a mashup of Type O Negative and Depeche Mode...or something. It's a couple guys from AFI. Pretty cool stuff!

Aaanyway, better get to workenstein.

cheers.

I have two bands I've recently come to enjoy. The first band is Explosions In The Sky. This band is an all instrumental band, but isn't computer processed... just a guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. I'm going to see them live April 12th which I cannot wait for ($12... awesome). Their songs range from soothing to very up beat and energetic, but nothing heavy.... but all around some of the best instrumental I've ever heard.

The second band is Band of Horses. Their new album "Cease to Begin" is fantastic (except 1 song, too country for me). Their an indie rock band that sounds a lot like The Shins, but still original. The album at least is worth a listen, especially if you like indie stuff.

Oooh! Good call on both! I had heard Explosions in the Sky on pandora but hadn't heard Band of Horses. Very very good stuff all around! You'll have to let us know how the live show is! Are they opening for anyone or are they headlining?

For my xmas discs I got:
Dropkick Murphys : The Meanest of Times
Blaqk Audio : CexCells
Nightwish : Dark Passion Play

All of which I highly recommend!

Yeah its their first release with the new singer. She's not as powerful as Tarja but she experiments a lot more and still has a beautiful voice. If you can, get the 2-disc version. The second disc is the first disc, minus the vocals track. So pure instrumental! Excellent gaming tunes, imho.

Anyway yeah, look forward to the review!

Due to the utter lack of quality new hard rock being released in recent years (IMO), I have been on a quest to find something good out there. Almost gave up hope, until now.

Found a new-ish band called Earl Greyhound. Their first full-length album came out about a year and a half ago. They were touring with Chris Cornell, so maybe someone here has seen them live.

They are good 'ol fashioned rock and roll in the same spirit as Zepellin, Bad Company, and many others. Loud guitars, heavy drums, and great vocals make them a pleasure to listen to. They give me hope that great new rock music is not dead.

You can listen to their tunes on their website:

http://earlgreyhound.com/

Wow! They do rock! I hear the Killers and vocally almost a hint of Coldplay and/or Robert Smith...(yeah I'll let you guys figure that one out... ;-) ) Tho I think they're lightyears ahead of The Killers in overall sound. They have a lot more emotion in their music...the Killers feel a bit static to me.

Will go on the list! Which seems to be getting longer every day, thanks Echo... I'm gonna have to go on a spree!

For those of you who still like buying the hardcopy version of your musics, here are a couple great sites for you:

http://www.secondspin.com
(online used cd/dvd/game store, free shipping specials every other week or so)

http://www.justthedisc.com
(all CDs $2.99 + $2 s/h, DVDs $3.99, all used, no cases or anything but a legit business)

Anyway, keep the musics coming! My recent find is Calexico. Very chill, accoustic-indie-ecclectic sounding, some folk/country/border influence, very very cool stuff.

http://www.myspace.com/casadecalexico

Give em a listen!

It's a completely free net-radio station that you customize and you can save tracks to a personalized playlist allowing you to go back to the songs you enjoyed (this is what bumps it above Pandora.com, imho).

Sweet, I love RUSH, esp old RUSH. Fly By Night or Fairwell to Kings we my two favorite albums I think. Though 2112 was good and I did enjoy the greatest hits one (something Radio i think the name of it is, can't remember now). When i think of RUSH inevitably BOC comes to mind as well. (In fact, my cousin was the sound man for BOC for several years in the 70's, but gave it up when he started to go def. It was cool, the band gave him a bunch of the sound equipment. We had gotten several speakers and stacks from him in the 80's, but alas, they are gone now.)

New band for everyone to check out. They're called the Midnight Juggernauts. It took a few listens till I really enjoyed their music, but now I think it's fantastic. Definitely not for everyone, but unique. It's very difficult to compare them to any other band I listen to. They're very electronic with for the most part mellow and smooth vocals. Worth a listen, but keep in mind it's odd lol.

One of the songs while playing Madden 09 struck me as amazing, so I went out and bought the artists cd which came out on tuesday. Innerpartysystem (odd name) is a brand new band that I think has some great potential. A few might know their song Don't Stop, but I only heard it for the first time about a month ago. The cd is pretty good, it's a rock group, but they do odd synthesizer things and techno-ish effects. I recommend checking them out, at least to hear Don't Stop which will get anyone pumped up.

Gorillaz is supposedly working on a new album. The lead singer (formerly of Blur...whatever his name is) has some new disc out about Chinese theater, however.

Enigma does indeed have a new album. It was released last month. It's called Seven Lives Many Faces. If you are an Enigma fan, check out this LINK

I haven't listened to them in quite some time, but enjoy their music a great deal. If you are into Enigma, then also check out (if you haven't already) Dead Can Dance. They are similar in style, but not as techno/pop-ish as Enigma. I'd compare them more to Deep Forrest. More of a blending of many cultures. They have very haunting vocals and wonderful instrumentals as well. Give them a listen. Into the Labyrinth is one of my all-time favorite albums. Lisa Gerrard's version of "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" is fantastic. Their first album is about the only one I didn't care for so much.

Well the concert was fantastic. Shiny toy guns seemed to have a much greater amount of energy due to their new singer, Sisely. She seemed extremely excited to be up there and it translated to a really energetic show. The band stuck around after the show so I got to meet them.... they pretty much hung out with the small crowd left which was awesome. The opening act was of a British band known as Your Vegas. I highly recommend this group, they sound like a mix between The Bravery and The Killers. I'm going to try and find their album "A Town and Two Cities" this week.
Not really a new band, but it seems they are starting to break out a bit.

The Decemberists. They get a lot of airplay on the "alternative music" type radio station hear in the Twin Cities.

Their sound is a bit hard to describe, but they seem to like to do concept albums (for better or worse). Their latest album is "The Hazards of Love", and it is growing on me.

I am not necessarily a fan of the whole "concept album" idea, but one of my favorite albums ever is "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by the Flaming Lips. I dunnno, that album just works (as strange as it is).

That's the same vibe I get from The Decemberists. Their album tells a story and it's works well.

Now I hafta go back and check out some earlier stuff. :)

Found a new band with some good potential:

Cage the Elephant

They released their first album last year and have a couple singles out.
Their sound is reminiscent of the White Stripes (esp. the vocals) but a bit funkier.

"Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" is a great tune, and I like "In One Ear" as well.

Give them a listen and see what you think.

Heard a cool tune on my local "alternative" style station by a band called Animal Collective.

It's called "My Girls". It's sort of in no man's land as to the type of music it is. The closest thing would be pseudo-techno pop. The song is multi-layered with a synth, drum track, and cool spacey vocals, but it is really light and has a super catchy hook/chorus.

I checked out some of their other stuff, and I'm not sure if I could get into the band as a whole or not.

Anyway....check it out. I think some of the DC music buffs will like it.

Ok, so I stumbled upon this treasure that I am absolutely ecstatic about. I'm a huge Shiny Toy Guns fan and apparently did not know their full history. Well, their keyboardist and lead male singer created two bands together prior to Shiny and much of it has been incorporated into STG.

The bands are Slyder and Cloud2Ground. Slyder is an Electronic/Trance band and Cloud2Ground is a mix of trance and vocals...more of an actual band. But some song parts now on actual Shiny Toy Guns albums. What's great is that their work is FREE.

**Now I downloaded everything using their free downloader, which limits your downloads per hour, thus you can only download about half the stuff before you have to wait an hour to download the rest** (worth it!)

http://slyder.clan.su/index/slyder/0-4 (For Slyder)
http://slyder.clan.su/index/cloud2ground/0-5 (For Cloud2Ground)

Also random, but one of their songs was featured in Grand Theft Auto 3 so some may recognize "Score" from the game if you played it.

The band is Mumford & Sons. Wonderful harmonies, great vocals, meaningful lyrics...all with a Celtic-ish, folk-ish, bluegrass-ish twist.

Check out the single Little Lion Man. If you aren't humming that song in your head for a while, then something is wrong with you.

I also like Roll Away Your Stone, Winter Winds, The Cave, and Timshel.

My new favorite song.

On MPCs website, there is an article about the Grammy nomination for a song from the game Civilization IV. I have never got into games such as this, but this song is wonderful and the video of cinematic events from the game fit perfectly. Anyone who has played Civi IV should recognize it...and also know that his game came out a long time ago. But the artist released it as a track on a new album (so says the posts of those in the comments below the article). Anyway, check it out. It's a moving and powerful piece, IMO.
