03/02/2006 What to do with the release of Unreal Tournament III (UT2007) coming?

Greetings everyone, I'd like to open this topic for debate.

With the release of UT2007 coming in the not too distant future, I'd like to discuss options ;)

We had at one time been planning a switch over of the entire server to UT2007 sometime after release, however there are some problems.

1) Invasion has been ganked from UT2007. It's possible a porting process to bring it over could be performed.

2) UT2004RPG, and DruidsRPG aren't going to be compatible without some manner of rewrite and recompile, and honestly, without invasion, don't currently seem to be an option...

3) Based on the number of reserved slots we have on the UT2004 setup, this doesn't seem to be an option at all. :)

So, my current line of thinking is to host a new UT2007 server side by side with the UT2004 server, until such a time as the donations towards the UT2004 server don't provide for its bandwidth costs anymore.

This isn't a cheap proposition either, as the hardware for the current DC server was in the vicinity of $1200. Another server I expect would have a similar cost.

I want to gauge everyone's interest level in playing UT2007 in the friendly environment DC provides, and if the interest is sufficient to warrant another a second box with associated bandwidth costs.

Now, I don't want this to be misconstrued as this community is in trouble, or is going away. The contributors of the DC server are covering the current bandwidth costs for the foreseeable future. I just want to know, how many of you who play UT2004 are planning to stop and instead play UT2007.

Thoughts?

I will be playing one or the other but not likely both. Chances are I will get "07 check it out and stay on '04 until DC gets it all hashed out. Without Invasion there is gonna need to be a major retool of the DC gametype for '07. Maybe the '07 server will be a CTF server or some other gametype that lends itself to the kind of gameplay DC has become known for providing, developing and supporting. The only thing really holding back any decisions is the waiting game. Until '07 is on our machines and we get a chance to actually playtest the various game types it is difficult to plan one way or the other. Also, coding for '07 may push your decision one way or the other. So for myself, I will be installing '07, I'll give it a thorough run through, and stay on DC '04 until a decision is made serverside.

I'll probably be making the jump to UT2K7, but I believe I'd stick around 2K4 strictly for the DC server. Epic has always been great for the UT community so I'm hoping they allow for the invasion gametype to be ported over easily.

invasion won't be in 2007 and while i might be wrong, i feel like re-making it for 2007 (by modders) might take a onsiderable time (correct me if i'm wrong on this). i mean we can't really have the same low poly monsters from unreal in 2007 and if we did, then why not play 2004 (which will definitely have more players for obvious reasons). i'm not saying every graphic should be perfect, but i wouldn't mind playing 2004 if the same creatures are on 07. that said; considering making the new invasion will take time, i would say switching over when invasion comes out would be good timing becasue by then a reasonable % of the ppl playing 2004 would have bought the new game.

summary: wait for a good invasion mod; one that is different -both graphics and gameplay to some extent - than 2004 (dru might make a big rpg update for 2007, that would solve the game play aspect)
give enough time so ppl can buy the game (1 month is a good amount of time for those who don't have financial restrictions to pick up the game. others might wait for discounts for a longer time)

also, kind of irrelevant but just to make sure everyone is on the same page, ut2007 looks most likely to be a Q4 release, so we have a lot of time. not very relevant but wanted to point out.

And even thoe they left out invasion ,im sure it'll be compatible with 2007.
Simply cause invasion is too popular ..reading the developers news articles n such ..i get the feeling this game is all about customizing. and hard core shooting.. people have models already made for 2007..and monster packs..
with that said .you brilliant people will come up with something snazzy ..you always do ..

You know, I can't 100% answer this until I see how UT2007 plays on my computer. But assuming it plays it "well enough," if I were to be the decision maker, I'd move once the game type was fairly stable. The only downside I see coming is that without some serious downgrading of some of the settings, I probably won't be able to play at the 1280x1024 resolution that's native to my flatscreen (unless I'm comfortable with 20fps, and I am so used to the 50-80 averages I tend to see, depending on map). :(

I play DC - and unless it becomes something other than an Invasion RPG server, I'll put my money into it.

Maybe I'll get lucky and the threading models they've reportedly instituted will have me good to go with my Athlon X2!

From the discussions about it, he's unsure he'll do it unless he's able to balance out the damage bonus to damage reduction on some sort of curve so that a high level player cant just frag a low level player, and a low level player can do more than 1 damage to a high level player.

I'm with Mystic on this one. I'll buy UT2007 for the crack but I'm only really interested in playing invasion on the DC server.

If that means sticking with UT2004 on DC until whenever it's decided the invasion port across to UT2007 is an improvement then I'm happy to wait.

Re:What to do with the release of UT2007 coming?

I'm quite sure my father is going to get Unreal Tournament 2007, however, I'm going to need to acquire some kick-spam hardware to run it. What we need to do is prepare for the future. I believe that, before moving up to Unreal Tournament 2007, DruidsRPG be perfected as much as possible. Solve most, if not all, balance issues, complete the trio of classes to utmost performance, and make everyone happy. That will be DruidsRPG v1.99. Unreal Tournament 2007 will be the big 2. DruidsRPG 2. Ah, it sounds nice. Anyhow, what we need to do is start modding. Make new, kick-spam monster models, set them all up and make them tidy, and after that, figure out how Unreal Tournament 2007 will handle UnrealScript. Considering it's an entirely new engine, I assume DruidsRPG will require quite a bit of tweaking, if not a total revamp. This would also be an excellent time to sign our Declaration of Independence from UT2004RPG, and become one without any core rules or limits, which would also tidy things up, and make things easier to change and add. I would absolutely love the idea of porting Invasion over to Unreal Tournament 2007. The very thought of it gives me a sense of euphoria, no joke. If we get the Engine specifications, we can get to work right now, which is what needs to be done. Be ready for the future.

Alright, we need to get organized. Scripters, Modelers (two l's?), Texturers. I'm a Scripter, hands-down.

Another idea, have a semi-crappy testing server, where new ideas and such can be tried out, but the official server will only be updated in large bounds (.1's or more). This way, you can stay on the server and not have to worry about your precious LA being screwed the wrong way , but you can still go over to the beta server and try it out. This will allow for easier testing, while keeping the people herded into groups of 'I don't care, I just wanna play', 'I like playing, but new ideas are always good', and 'Okay, what's been suggested, and how are we going to implement it?'.

Please give some thought to everything I've said, and if you like my ideas, please announce so. I haven't had a compliment in a wihle, and it's like a hug to me :). I also advise reading through this post as you reply, making sure you hit all the topics.

All power to you KohanX for your determination to see it ported across, I don't have any skills that'd be useful to you but I'll support your efforts in any way I can.

At the monent, until we get our hands on the UT2k7 code it's all pie in the sky :?

I say lets keep DC running the way it is until such time as there is a viable alternative to Invasion on UT2004, then decided as a community whether we should switch over.

There's no point jumping the gun at this stage.

Yes Tidu, you're absolutely right, I just want to figure things out ahead of time, to the point where at least less than half the DC population will be asking about an Invasion 2007 release date.

I think one of the reasons it probably won't be put in 2007 is that Atari owns the rights to some of the concepts and "species" used in invasion and I believe that epic is having someone else publish or distribute (not sure exactly how all of the details are or if I'm even way off course)

Anyway I'll definatly help out if I can on getting something made for 2007. Right now I'm concentrating on making models which takes time but hopefully before the end of the year I'll have some Java & C++ training so I may be able to help with coding a bit.

We need to start a 2007 invasion wishlist :)

I'm wondering.....Has anyone who discussed UT07 in the forum thought about the processor speeds/OS necessary to run the game? We probably have those players who have high-end PCs loaded with XP PRO, some who have mid-range PCs loaded with XP Home/PRO, and those who may have only 98SE/ME. UT04 runs on all of those OS and most processor speeds. UT07 may only run on XP and the minimum processor speed may be more than the 98SE/ME and earlier XP machines, similar to Quake 4/Doom 3 requirements..............

Has anyone been reading the main UT forums and articles posted out there and seen what the projected HW requirements were going to be???? I saw one where one of the high level folks who was working on the UT2K7 project said at some conference or trade show that a system with PCI-X and a top end 6800GT might only be acceptable. Read that last part again... might only be acceptable The UE3 engine which is being used in 2K7 is impressive, but it requires a real beast of a machine to run it. That is one of the reasons why 2K7 has taken so long...the hardware had to catch up to it, and even now, rumor has it that they still have to lower the details.

As for me, regardless of the fact that I am more of a TDM, CTF, TLMS fan and I only play INV on DC for the company...my current AMD Barton 2500 machine with 1.5GB of RAM and a 9500Pro will not hack UT2K2, and Uncle Sam sure made it certain that I will not be getting a new machine until I get a pay raise. And I do not see that happening until the pre-IPO company I work for gives pay raises (something almost unheard of), or I get a different job, or have some sort of windfall which gets me out from under the load I am carrying right now. Even a reserved slot on DC or a subscription to play Eve is not looking promising right now.

Well E3 is here and UT2007 has been seen in more depth. To answer E's question about the machine you'll need, the guy in the interview talks about how it will be able to run on most machines due to its highly customizeable options(towards the end). It's a long interview talking about all the modes and gives some gameplay footage, but it looks like it will be much easier to access than thought before which is great, and it looks fantastic! I'm not sure how long it'll be up for since there's lots at E3, but for now it's listed around the middle of the page at "E3 stage demos" on May 10th :D

I guess I'll look at it from the angle of by the time DC'07 becomes a reality, I'll be able to afford the hardware necessary to run it! :-) Honestly, as it's been stated and re-stated, it's the community that makes DC, not the game. I can still pick up UT'07 and play as I'll wanna play with all the cool new toys but yeah, I'll hang out for whatever. I must say tho, a DC-CTF/RPG crossover sounds like a total blast. Team healing, experience percentage based on the level of the person you drop... mumble mumble..... Alas, the weight of my voice is pretty limited, as I'm not a contributor or anything. I play here and only here. It was the first server I ever joined and love it. UT2007 is very impressive. I have seen and read anything I have found on the content, release and reviews and am very impressed. But I love how DC is set up. I'm sure I will buy the new version, which may force an upgrade or 2, but I will continue with 04 as long as it's here.

I just cant wait untill Epic actually opens their 07 website beyond the static logo page. Then we all can start to drool. I have my bib. Do you?

What to do with the release of UT2007 coming?

My 2 cents. Yes I believe I will buy 2007. I have been following this release since early on. It is now pushed back to actualy first half 2007, but they are talking about getting a demo out before XMAS.

This will be good and that way I can see how slow it will run on my puter. Let's assume my pc runs fine, the truth is I would go back to CTF which I can honestly say I am better at and cross the fingers to see if anyone ports the invasion over.

I agree that will be a huge task. The quality of the graphics alone is going up 1500 times greater then the current.

Now if I find my computer lagging a fair amount, then I stay on DC and save my cash and hopefully by the time the full release is out, I would have a new puter.

Ok there is my 2 cents.

Re:What to do with the release of UT2007 coming?

Just reading this on Wikipedia:

Gameplay
The following game modes have been confirmed[3]:

Deathmatch

Team Deathmatch

Capture the flag

Onslaught - Essentially a team deathmatch type of gameplay played on a huge map where the object is to destroy, capture and hold key power nodes. The gameplay is very similar to the conquest gametype of Battlefield 1942, however, after capturing key nodes you must destroy your enemy's power core. Vehicles are extremely critical in onslaught mode. This mode was introduced in UT2004.

Unreal Warfare (formerly known as Conquest) - New to UT2007, maps will be potentially as large as three Onslaught maps, and will have objectives similar to Assault maps. A limited form of resource management will exist in the form of tarydium mines or fields that must be captured; the more your team captures, the faster you can build vehicles and turrets, and the more bunkers you have the more tarydium you will need. Bunkers will possibly serve a similar purpose to power nodes in Onslaught. This type of gameplay mode was also in the game Command & Conquer: Renegade.

Unconfirmed game modes:

Vehicle Capture the Flag - Originally it was stated that there would be a separate gametype for Capture the Flag with vehicles, but it now appears as if that idea has been scrapped and vehicles will be included in Capture the Flag by default[3].
Invasion- A team of players holds off waves of creatures from the Unreal universe for as long as possible. Unlike UT2K3/UT2K4 invasion, which had the creatures ported straight from the original Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2007 will feature completely redesigned creatures made in Unreal Engine 3 [citation needed].

And even thoe they left out invasion ,im sure it'll be compatible with 2007.
Simply cause invasion is too popular ..reading the developers news articles n such ..i get the feeling this game is all about customizing. and hard core shooting.. people have models already made for 2007..and monster packs..
with that said .you brilliant people will come up with something snazzy ..you always do ..

yep, I've got 3d studio max (demo). I need to start working on my 10k poly neo :)

Also, I'd love to take a shot at making/skinning some monsters for an 07 invasion style game.

Once they release UT3, I'll wait a bit and then make a new box. I have my cube case sitting in the corner waiting for new hardware :)
