That's a really cool title... anyhow, I was thinking that every weapon should be able to be Vorpal. Just scale the Instagibity (fun word) inversely on the speed of the weapon, and everything will be balanced. Sound like a plan? It wouldn't be too hard to do, so I can do it in my spare time if you so wish.

I think we should have sharks with laser beams attached to their heads.

HERESY!!!! Sure it does a heap of damage but, on the flipside, playing melee you take at least double the damage a gun-fighter takes so I think it works itself out nicely! Its pretty standard fare for the melee weap to be overpowered, look at half life (crowbar), farcry (machette), pretty much any fps, if you're willing to get close enough to use it, theres a reward that weighs evenly against the damage you're gonna take. So yeah...thats my braingoo in a bowl.

/steps off soapbox

cheers!

I hear what you're saying, but once you get past vamp 4, the dmg you take becomes less important. You make it up with each hit. It's only when you get swarmed that you're in trouble, but being swarmed is a problem no matter what weapon you have (cept deemer with globe).

Another aspect is that the monsters chase you. Players are in effect, "monster magnets", meaning the SG doesn't require much aim. The monster often does the work for you and walks right into it.

Still another aspect is agro. Especially when the server is crowded, the shield gun guy does not take double damage due to melee precisely because the monster is shooting at another player, allowing the SG player to easily flank or backstab. When I used to play SG, I would deliberately allow other players to get the early shots in so they got agro and *then* I'd charge with SG, block their shots with my body and get get the kill. Since I wasn't doing dmg to the monster, I didn't even start getting agro until that first succesful shield gun hit landed.

I think SG should be powerful, but it is too low skill for that much power.

Right now, it kills everything from a brute or less with one full shot (assuming maxed db, not sure without). I think a fully healthy brute should take one full hit and a follow up (i.e. one full charge and one min charge). So, it's still a very viable weapon in low ammo situations but discourages Kill-steal Karl from relying on it soley.

Back in my early LW days, when I had like vamp 2 or 3, if I had to go to the bathroom I would position myself in a corner facing out and put a book on top of mouse 1 with the shield gun...

Hmmmmm, I don't know about the SSR. I've been on some servers that used it and the scores were way inflated for the abilities.

What if we made it a special ssr that only worked for me? >

Give it to the monsters next april fools.

Is there any way to play the single player in UT with mods enabled (RPG, specifically?)

You can do instant action, but if you mean the single player ladder thing, I don't know of a way.

Is the shield gun over the top?

What I don't like about it most is that it is powerful enough that on queen/warlord/titan waves you are almost gauranteed the kill if you double-dodge jump at the bad guy while other players are shooting at it with other weapons. Even more so when the triple is involved, and because it's a one-hit kill scenario, the triple only needs to be run for the bare minimum duration.

I was thinkging about super weapon dmg. That way, even if a high level doesn't have a piercing, with some clever moves, like working around corners, the player can make smart use of the SG!
I didn't try poison +3, but I've maxed and capped poison weapons and hit myself with them. With DMM it does around 90% dmg. So it can't be broken across the board, but it just seems like +1 and +2 (maybe +3 as well, but didn't test) are broken.

It sounds like I should boost the power of the AR a bit instead of replacing it with some grossly overpowered weapon..

Do you still use that bernouli shot gun thingy, vortex? I think it would be cool if LW got some exclusive weapons (that LA and LM couldn't get period). No-drop or disentegrate on drop (better). LM gets pets and LA has special artifacts. Why not special weps for LW? Maybe an artifact that converts an existing wep to the special wep...

I dont understand what you mean by DoT. But you do get exp for damage caused by poison.

You just don't get the vamp because you are not inflicting the damage directly from Instigator to Target. The damage is happening from Inventory to Target.

DoTs are "death over time" or "damage over time" weapons, like poison. That is an EQ term, but I thought it was pretty common.

I was asking because you stated in your post that the poison didn't know who it's "owner" was, so I figured, how does it know how to assign exp then?

At any rate, I haven't tested with another poison wep, but does anyone have any ideas on this?

Why does everyone have it in for the assault rifles?

Horrifically innacurate and even at close range it does exceptionally poor dmg. I had duel rage 11 AR once, and with a triple, it was probably as powerful as a plain mini with no triple. I think even if the AR were given vorpal chances I still wouldn't use it, except to mess around.

Sure, give an LW a triple and he'll do better - but as much as a person with surge? Nah. It will make him better... but if it turns into a triple war, as long as the LA can survive, the LW isn't gonna be able to do anything about it since he can't run the triple as well or as long. The key thing in there is "as long as the LA can survive", which isn't really assured at all.

LW has nice combo ability and weapons like the avril, mines and deemer that can help balance the equation if people use them to full effect. They can also play more aggresively in most scenarios.

But, if you take two level 75 players, one LA and the other LW, who prefer a particular weapon such as the flak (a one-weapon-wonder), in the end, the LA player will typically do better by virtue of the triple.

did u play stock class(pump) or is that all they had back then lol. About the map we could also go into the woods for some woodsball unreal inv lol or i have also heard of this casle conquest thingy were theres just like a big casle with some woods and speed ball feilds around it we could remake that if we could get some pictures or idk if i would want to becuse we have many casle maps aredy.

I didn't play stock class, but I did mostly play pump. I have an old phantom. There weren't many stock class games in norcal.

The switch from pumps to semis happened right around the time when I first started playing. It was also when stock class started. In '91, about half the players were pump and the other played semi. By 1992, nearly all the players had semis.

My phantom was pretty pimp. I was the first person I know to put an expansion chamber (and later a regulator) on a pump gun with the idea that because it would improve consistency it would also greatly improve accuracy. People thought I was crazy at the time.

Wow, I didn't know so many people played paintball. I played for quite some time and pretty intensely (15 - 25 days a year, typically), from around 1991 - 2001. I keep meaning to get back out there but other interests and/or money issues have always got in the way. Right now I'm into running and mountain biking. I still keep up with the goings-on though.

I even wrote an article on pump play back in the day (published in the oct '96 issue of APG). I got a hundred buckaroos for it.

I always thought Tom Sawyer's island at Disneyland would make a great field.
Wow, excellent work! Very informative!
